Hear the bells…

Hello readers !! We usually have our Chrimbo shopping all done by now, but we haven’t even started it yet. The pressure is well and truly on. The kids want everything in the Argos book including lawnmowers and beds. I’m bringing them to see Santa today ( not the real one, some bloke in a department store, but keep that to yourself ). I remember being brought to see Santa as a child, that is me being the child, not Santa. Standing outside Switzers (now Brown Thomas ) in the freezing cold for 4 hours amazing at the technology used in the window displays when a reindeer would move his head slightly to the left and then back again. Witchcraft I thought. You would then be led into see Santa and all of a sudden it was like an oven. You’d sit on his lap and blurt out something about … There’s more

Reader’s Wives EP Review

Ok, this one is a great little treasure to find. It sat in my inbox for far too long as work, a hectic social life and just plain forgetfulness let it fall by the wayside, but last weekend I finally threw Secrecy and Sex into the CD player and gave it a listen…and another listen…and another. I was hooked. The five track EP from Reader’s Wives is a dark, raw compendium of what will surely be an exciting future for this Dublin band. The brainchild of Niall James Holohan, the band produced a critically well received album in 2008, but this EP is the mark of a very solid line-up, comfortable with each other musically to allow plenty of experimentation. Chris Morrin, Doug Farrell and Disko complete the four piece, whose music is a no holds barred eclectic mix. Sexually Attracted to Myself, is a superb Smiths inspired track, with … There’s more

Accidental Death of an Anarchist: review

Devious Theatre put on a run of Dario Fo’s ‘Accidental Death of an Anarchist’ this past weekend in Kilkenny’s new Set Theatre. It was my first time to be inside the Set Theatre so I was looking forward to seeing that as much as seeing the play. And I wasn’t disappointed with either one The stage was small and intimate, the set an office environment which was the office of Inspector Bertozzo (played by John Morton) on the second floor of the police headquarters in Milan, Italy and later transformed into the office of Inspector Pisani (Alan Butler) in the same building on the fourth floor.

Twitter Kris Kindle

Interested in participating in a Twitter kris kindle this year? The plan is to buy a €10 gift for another tweeter and keep it secret until it arrives; or you can choose not to reveal yourself at all. Tweeters based outside of Ireland are welcome to join in. It will be luck of the draw where you have to post your present to so keep it light. Reply to me in this post or on twitter (to @bngr) by @reply or DM by this Wednesday 9th December if you’re interested. I’ll gather the names of all tweeters interested; take names and address; draw names from the hat; and give you details of who you have to send your kris kindle present to. And if you don’t know who they are you can go stalk their twitter account to see what they’re interested in.

But is it Art part 2

School of Saatchi BBC 2 mondays at 9pm You may have seen my post last week about this. It’s another ‘apprenticeship as prize’ type show but this one is for artists. Not the ‘able to paint really well’ type artists, it’s the ‘place a stick of celery in a large empty room and call it Art’ type of artist. The prize is a so called ‘Dream Ticket’; a slot in a prestigious exhibition and a three year patronage with your own studio. Do I sound biased already? Yes. Trouble is I actually like contemporary art. You learn two things from this show 1. the process by which the artist comes up with his/her piece. 2. NEVER meet the artist. When you see art you like you bring your own thing to it and why you like it may have nothing to do with the thoughts behind creating it. I really … There’s more

What was your worst interview?

As we go into the interview stage of this year’s Apprentice Ireland, possibly the toughest week for contestants, where the candidates will be viciously grilled by Bill’s handpicked interviewers, I can’t help but think back over my own interview history. Let me start by saying, I give good interview. I always have. Of all the interviews I’ve had since I was 16 years of age, I’ve been offered the position in well over 90% of cases. So, it stands to reason that the ones that did not result in an offer play on my mind. I ask myself what I could have done better, what went wrong, did I wear the wrong suit, was my handshake too limp… But one interview stands out as being particularly harrowing - yes, I did shed a tear. As I tentatively write this, it still stirs up mixed feelings of anger, embarrassment and even … There’s more

Christmas Countdown: Top 25 Movies of 2009 – No.19

We’re now one week into my quest to chart the Top 25 Movies of 2009 and we’ve already had some controversy. Some will disagree with my placing of watchmen at 20, some with the fact that Anvil! The Story of Anvil get a place at all and yet more will find fault with my placing of today’s movie. I invite and welcome all criticism. I mean I’m no expert! Number 19 of my list is…
