Sometimes something reaches my earbuds that I shouldn’t like, but so want to dance to. Gabriella Cilmi first crossed our screens and radios with a sweet sounding tale of not being that sweet. Well one image change later and she is trying to… er… I’m not sure. “(I am a) Woman On A Mission” sounds like the sequel to “I Need A Hero” by Bonnie Tyler, or she’s given up waiting and is going to do it herself. There is an Eighties sound to it (I suspect a sample from Joe Jackson’s “Stepping Out”) and it works. The song is destined to feature in promos for TV shows for the next 20 years.
Its also a bit cheesy.
There is enough cheese for a few fondues and cheese sandwiches for the entire Irish Country Woman’s Association. And they can put away a lot of sandwiches.
Not that there is anything wrong with cheese. But add this over the top video and it gets very cheesy. I’m waiting for the Muppets to do a cover (or a duet) with Miss Piggy wearing her Pigs In Space uniform in the above video joined by the long legged feather boa monsters as her backing dancers. That’s when you take over the top and keep going.
I do love the song. It’s an earworm that should get a few dancefloors filled. A song designed for hen parties and a pop song for others. Yes I expect a Tegan and Sara cover soon enough. Ive also sung along to it while driving. Should I be ashamed?
She has a new album coming out called “Ten” around March 22 and Xenomania, Dallas Austin, Greg Kursten and upcoming British production team Invisible Men all help out on the production and writing parts. “On A Mission”, the single comes out around March 8, sounds like the earworm based belters that Xeonmania create.
As for the “Mission” in question, well the Freudian rocket launching between her legs might suggest something, but I think the mission is to make the streets more interesting as the video features one of the scariest fashion trends I’ve seen this year; Flesh coloured leggings. They work wonderfully on the slim and limber Ms Cilmi, but I’ve seen them worn on a woman the combined size size of her backing dancers. Walking through the shopping centre the lizard part of my brain was going “something is wrong here, whats wrong” but when I got closer and more in focus the rest of my brain went “aggghhh” followed by “oh” when it realised that it wasn’t seeing what it thought it was.
The mission might get scary yet, and cause a few car crashes.
