UCC’s Trad Fest is on for the first week in February.
Here is the schedule of events
Monday, February 1st
Session at Spailpin Fanac starting at 9:30pm.
Tuesday, February 2nd
Session at Seomra Caidreamh starting at 6pm followed by a ceilí upstairs at 9:30pm.
Wednesday, February 3rd
Free concert by Holly Geraghty (concertina), Jonathan Roche (button accordion) and Matt Griffin (guitar) from 1pm - 2pm at Seomra Caidreamh. Upstairs at 9:30pm there is a concert by Blackie O’Connell (uilleann pipes), Karol Lynch (banjo) and Cyril O’Donoghue (bouzouki) for 5 Euros.Thursday, February 4th
A free concert in O’Riada Hall [Music Building on Sundays Well Road] at 8pm and afterwards, a session at the Avenue Bar [Sundays Well Road].
Friday, February 5th
A free concert by Iarla O’Lionaird and Steve Cooney at Aula Maxima [UCC] from 1pm-2pm.
At 5pm in O’Riada Hall will be the annual O’Riada Lecture. This year’s presentation is by Séamus de Barra and is titled ‘Revisioning Tradition: Aloys Fleischmann and the makings of modern Irish music’.
Doors are opening 8:30pm at The Pavilion for the concert by Caladh Nua followed by Danú, The cost is 15 Euros for those with UCC student ID’s and 20 Euros for those without.
Caladh Nua features Eoin O’Meachair (banjo, mandolin & whistles), Paddy Tutty (fiddle), Lisa Butler (lead vocals & fiddle), Derek Morrissey (button accordion) and Colm O’Caoimh (guitar, bouzouki & vocals) are from counties Carlow, Waterford and Kilkenny. Have a listen to their new album Happy Days.
Danú features Benny McCarthy (button accordion), Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh (vocals, whistle and flute), Eamonn Doorley (bouzouki), Oisin McAuley (fiddle), Donal Clancy (guitar), Donnchadh Gough (bodhrán and uilleann pipes) and Tom Doorley (flute and whistle). I am a fan and have several of their tunes sets on the iPod.
This should be an excellent concert, I hope that one of our Culchies will get to attend and report back.
