Competition Closed: Oscar Competition

Oscar night takes place on Sunday 7 March this year with hosts Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin.

Can you predict who’s going to win all the oscars? Now’s your chance to prove you had it right. In the comments below, give me your predictions for 1) best film, 2) best director, 3) best actor, 4) best actress, and for the tie-breaker, 5) the number of combined oscar wins for Avatar and The Hurt Locker. I’ll then cobble the stats together before the night so you can see what your competition is. There’s a fancy prize for the winner. Below is a summary of the nominees for the categories you need to make predictions on and the full list of niminations is here.

Closing date for predictions is this Friday. Getting commenting.

********* Competition Deadline Closed*********

Ok there are 21 entrants to the competition, below is a chart of all the predictions (pending tie-breaker from Emily). The stats are as follows:

Most popular film: Hurt Locker 11/21 (with Avatar 9/21, Precious 1/21)

Most popular director: Bigelow 13/21 (with Cameron 6/21, Tarantino 2/21)

Most popular actor: Bridges 15/21 (with Firth 4/21, Renner 2/21)

Most popular actress: Sidibe 12/21 (with Streep, Bullock & Mulligan at 3/21)

Most Popular combination: Hurt Locker+Bigelow+Bridges+Sidibe 4/21

Average tie-breaker for Hurt Locker/Avatar oscars: 10

Best of luck on the night.

********* THE RESULTS *********

How’s it going, sorry for the delay. Hope you all enjoyed the oscar night glitz and glamour. As you will know by now the oscar winners were:

Best film: Hurt Locker, Best director: Kathryn Bigelow, Best actor: Jeff Bridges, Best actress: Sandra Bullock, No. of oscars combined for Hurt Locker and Avatar: 9 (6 for HL, 3 for Avatar)

And yes, there was no outright winner; 9 people guessed right 3 out of the 4; and of those 9, none guessed the tie-breaker of 9 oscar wins; so taking the people who guessed 3 winners correctly and guessed either 8 or 10 in the tie breaker; this left us with 4 competitors: Jo, Narocroc, Aoife & John M Finn. In the old fashioned way we at Culch decided to put these 4 names into a hat and draw one winner which was …*drum roll*…*fanfare*

JO

Congratualtions Jo. You win a selection of fancy DVDs.

Thanks for everyone for competing.

Emma - you left out your tie break prediction.

Tcup - I enjoyed HL but wouldn’t watch it again, too long.

Annie - great to see we’ve entered your subconscience, that’s our real goal here at culch..I mean..

  25. bngr says:

I’ve just updated the post to include a chart of all the competition entrants and stats of our combined predictions. Take a look.

    See you after Oscar night.

  26. voodoo says:

Whoops, missed this. Too much real life not enough internet.

  27. Ronan says:

Oops, meant to enter this. Howandever, here would’ve been my picks-

    Best Film : Hurt Locker
    Best Director : Deuce Bigelow
    Best Actor : Bridges
    Best Actress : Streep

    Tie Breaker: 11

  28. Annie says:

So many close calls, but as far as I can see no-one got it! I blame it on Sandra Bullock (one of my least favourite actresses ever).

  29. bngr says:

Hello all, see update to post with details of the result and winners. Thanks to all for competiting.

Voodoo - some say that’s the right balance, I say get back on line mrs.

Ronan - you too got 3 out of the 4 oscar winners right but not enough on the tie breaker to make the final cut.

Annie - you’re right, but I think Bullock was always more of a contender than Sidibe. They already covered the novelty + minority bases with Monique & Waltz, so they went for the past performance with the lead actor oscars.

  30. bngr says:

Jo - if you could contact me or Darren at [email protected] that would be great.
