Leap Year: the positive spin

Okay, okay, practically everything Allan said here is true (Allan’s post comes with spoiler alert ). But all films need to be seen in context, and in context, this film isn’t half bad. Here are some reasons to go see it:

If you’re a girl and you like rom coms you’ll enjoy it. It’s not of Pretty Woman standard but its a good middle of the road in the rom com genre.

If you’ve seen PS I Love You, think of Leap Year as Bertie while PS I Love You is Haughey & Lowry combined. Taken in the context of PS I Love You’s atrocious accents, Oirish twee and underwehealming story; the lapses in geography and accent and the level of cheese in Leap Year are a trifle. Matthew Goode does a fairly good accent overall, way better than the likes of Pierce Brosnan.

It’s got Amy Adams in it.

It doesnt have Matthew McConnaghty in it.

It’s got lovely scenery and makes Ireland look very pretty.

It’s bound to attract a whole spate of tourists to Ireland which is not a bad thing nowadays.

Sold.

I thought the trailer looked decent, feeling better after your post :) Will see this at some point on television versus the big screen. Wondering what folks thought of the Irish film ‘On The Edge’ released back in 2001. Cillian Murphy and Stephen Rea amongst others, were in it, I thought it was good, liked the ‘Please Forgive Me’ by David Gray at the end. Thought the American actors were good, even their go at the Irish and northern Irish accents, from my perspective anyways.

A film that gets a 20% average from 113 reviews on RT is not a middle of the road film, be it a rom-com or not. Then again, like the dude says, that’s just your opinion man.

Seamus - I’ve never seen that In the Edge film. One of these days.

Anto - its pass the time stuff, it does what it says on the tin. And it makes Ireland look way nicer than the latest tourism ads.
