Ireland and the Oscars

I was fortunate enough to catch the three Irish Oscar nominated movies on Wednesday evening in the IFI. I had only seen the great Granny O’Grimm before, but was hugely surprised at the very moving The Door and the visually beautiful Secret of Kells.

The Door is a powerful short film, set in Chernobyl in 1986 - a universal tale of life, loss and death, it is nominated for Best Short Film (Live Action).

In the magical feature-length animation, The Secret of Kells, 12-year-old Brendan fights Vikings and a monster to find a crystal and complete the legendary book of Kells. Kells is nominated for Best Animated Feature Film.

Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty is nominated for Best Animated Short and is the story of a seemingly sweet old lady who terrifies her little granddaughter at bedtime with her dark version of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale. To celebrate the nomination, Granny will screen at over 50 cinemas across the country over the next week with new releases 4 times IFTA winner Ondine and Case 39.

The Oscar winners will be announced tomorrow evening, so fingers croassed for all the Irish hopefuls.
