Alice in Wonderland has been out a few weeks now and it has broken all sorts of Irish box office records. It has had the biggest opening of any 3D movie in Ireland so far, including Avatar, and is still holding well in cinemas. It’s the biggest March opening of any film to hit Irish cinemas.
I still stand by my review – it is a gorgeous film, beautifully realised by Tim Burton. Anne Hathaway steals the show with her best performance to date and newcomer Mia Wasikowska is a superb older Alice.
But now that the film has been out for a few weeks, Culch.ie wants to know what you thought of it. And for going to the trouble of leave us a few comments about the film, we have some rather cute and retro Limited Edition Alice in Wonderland Viewfinders to giveaway. To be in with a chance of getting one, just let us know what you thought of the movie - and be honest.
It was soul destroying. I refer you to here… http://www.scannain.com/2010/03/09/silver-screen-reflection-alice-in-wonderland/
Tim Burton didn’t disappoint. And better than the rehash of his sleepy hollow/corpse bride style that I expected, it was a fresh take on the typical goth style alice that i really enjoyed. I even managed to gloss over Johnny Depp’s only vaguely cringeworthy attempt at a scottish accent, because the film was just so gorgeous to look at. I’ll try to forget, however, that stupid dance thing they sneaked in that was incredibly disney-ified…
Her best performance to date? Are you actually having a laugh??
I was so disappointed beyond words with this film. Watered-down kid-friendly Burton with hammy acting by the lead Mia; the best thing in it was the Red Queen. Oh god it was awful.
And don’t get me started on THAT dance by Johnny Depp.. rot in hell ‘fudderwackin’ or whatever its called.
**end rant**
i’m going to be honest here i dont want the viewfinder thing i just wanted to say that i thought this was woeful it looks good as an aesthetic but i just didn’t enjoy it at all. The red queen i agree was the best thing about the film. But the Alice girl was a desperate actress she was cat like!
Thought it looked fantastic (though again, the 3D REALLY serves no purpose…grrrrr), and both Queens Hathaway and Bonham-Carter stole the show
But it ultimately felt hollow, and shouldn’t have been called ‘Alice in Wonderland’…I am a huge Tim Burton fan, but the whole ‘reimagining’ thing with regulars Depp and Bonham C is really starting to wear thin now. Oh yes, and the Mad Hatter dance was horrible!
Where’s the whimsy gone? The randomness? Alice was a feminist icon, a little girl who wouldn’t be told things one way or the other. Stubborn and proud, but also a girl who didn’t take no nonsense from no hilarious anthropomorphic carcature of stuck-up British social norms.
Instead, the movie gives us Alice 2.0. We’re supposed to believe she’s a feminist icon because she wears cool armour and slays the mighty Jabberwocky, but she only slays the Jabberwocky because the prophecy says she will, a prophecy revealled by a pot-smoking caterpillar surrounded by equally male characters (excluding the doormouse, of course). How is that any different than the expectation that Alice should preserve the family line by marrying? She’s a tool here. She isn’t master of her own destiny and none of the decisions made are hers.
Yes, it’s great we finally got a female fantasy movie lead, but what’s the point in celebrating if it sacrificed everything which made the book version of the character wonderful?
And it was too Lord of the Rings, with the whole “swords and sorcery” and “good and evil” schtick. Alice in Wonderland isn’t a door-stpping fantasy epic, it’s a sequence of randomly whimsical events. I’m sad The Chronicles of Narnia didn’t take off either, Disney - but get over it.

I really enjoyed the film. Anne Hathaway was great!
I really enjoyed it, thought that although there could have been more to the story the whole thing was a wee bit magical.
I was a bit sceptical going in thinking it was going to be another predictable depp/burton/carter show (don’t get me wrong I love them all) and was expecting more of the same. But in fairness it was amazingly done, loved the bit at the start where Alice falls down the rabbit hole thought I was going to be whacked on the head with a load of rocks
P.S. Burton if you’re reading I really think you need to do the wizard of Oz next
This Movie is Johnny Depp and Tim Burtons eight film together. This film is far from being their best together, i was slightly disappointed as i thought Alice in wonderland would be a great story for Tim Burton to work on and put his on style on. i expected more, but when it is a Tim Burton film its hard not to have high expectations. This is more of a sequel to the old story where Alice is 19 years of age and her mother wants her to marry a stupid but powerful man. As he is about to get down on one knee and ask young Alice for her hand in marriage, She wanders off through the garden and falls down a rabbit hole, this sequence by the way if seen in 3D is mighty impressive, And from here on in the crazy new world and adventure begins. The Red Queen played brilliantly by Helena Bonham Carter has taken over and the only way that she can be stopped is if Alice can kill the Red Queens dragon, called the Jabberwocky( i just kept thinking Star Wars when that was mentioned) Anyway and if killed the underworld would then go back to the White Queen, delightfully overacted but in a great way by Anne Hathaway. Alice does not believe see can kill the dragon but the rest of the creatures and crazy characters have all the faith in the world in her. The scenes are crazy and the imagination of Burton is something I’ve always loved, you will be caught up in all the visual effects and that reason along is good enough to see this, even if the story is very thin at times. For me though its not a patch on Avatar for its effects but the falling down the rabbit hole scene and very scene with the big smiling cat are very impressive. So just go sit back and enjoy the colors really, don’t expect a great storyline thought cause unfortunately its not here.
I don’t think it was as good as everyone is saying or as bad as everyone is saying- very middle of the road. Cinematography was excellent but the acting was mediocre. I am a big Johnny Depp fan but he let me down in this!
