Guest Post: Wisdom Comes To Tralee

Say hi to Claire, Culch.ie’s newest contributor. She wants to share with us a coup for Tralee - an exhibition by the acclaimed artist Andrew Zuckerman. Very nice!

Wisdom, Clint Eastwood‘One of the greatest gifts we can give another generation is our experience, our wisdom’. These are the words of Desmond Tutu and they inspired artist Andrew Zuckerman to ask well-known figures like Billy Connolly, Judi Dench, Nelson Mandela among others to contribute their words of wisdom to his latest exhibition of photography. So along with great photographic portraits of these famous people, Andew Zucherman’s exhibition includes their words of wisdom.

Writer Chinua Achebe is quoted as saying ‘Nobody can teach me who I am’ - for me that says it all. We are all tasked with finding out who we are, or to put it another way - of creating ourselves. It takes time to sculpt the person that you are, you may have brothers and sisters but you are unique. Much of our time as people is spent trying to understand life - this exhibition gives you a head start or a few words of wisdom to help you on your way.

Rosamunde Pilcher quotes actress Thora Hird who said - ‘You don’t stop doing things because you get old, you get old because you stop doing things.’

A prerequisite of contributing to the exhibition was that each participant had to be over 60 and, of course, famous. It includes Clint Eastwood, Madeline Albright, Vaclav Havel, John Hume, Dr. Garrett Fitzgerald, Nick Nolte, Jane Goodall, Ted Kennedy, Billie Jean King, Henry Kissinger, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Robert Redford, Vanessa Redgrave, Andrew Wyeth, Nadine Gordimer, Graham Nash, Ravi Shanker, Chuck Close, Richard Rodger, Massimo & Leila Vignelli Esta Mahlangu and Zbegniew Brzezinski.

If you’ve ever thought - if I knew then, what I know now, how much better my life would be - then this exhibition is for you. It’s an exhibition that is a work in progress, insofar as Andrew Zuckerman intends to add more contributors. It is currently showing at Siamsa Tire in Tralee until April 17th whereupon it departs for the artist’s native New York and has come to Tralee following its opening in Sydney. Tralee has Maurice Galway, the director of the Dingle Film Festival, to thank for bringing this gem to us. We salute you Maurice!

This exhibition looks fantastic. I am jealous of those who have the opportunity to visit this event. Is there anyway Maurice Galway could arrange for this exhibit to visit the North West of England?!
    I live in hope!!!!!
