Event: The return of Dr. Who
So what did ye think? I liked it, still not convinced about Matt Smith, felt he was trying too much to be like David Tennant. I hope he gets into his own stride for the rest of the series, and doesn’t rely too much on the eccentric side of the Doctor. Thought the bit with all the doctors faces was a wee bit of a toasted cheese sandwich, but it didn’t make me want to turn it off. I’m still curious about where Steven Moffat will bring the Doctor. Oh and I’m loving the new companions’ name; Amelia Pond. That’s a good name!
So what did the rest of ye think?
I really, really liked it. No real problems apart from some dodgy looking CGI, but i had almost forgotten David T’s Doctor by the time it was over (and isn’t that the whole point?). I think Matt Smith is gonna be great, though he obviously has a lot to live up too. Personally I thought the sequence showing all previous doctors was a nice touch (as a long-time Who fan), and the setting was a nice change from the usual London-ccentric one. I didn’t think M. Smith was trying too hard to be David Tennant…i think it’s just leftover traces of everyone being so used to David T’s doctor (a tough act to follow). Looking forward to future episodes!
I too thought that Matt Smith was trying to do a David Tennant, who I loved — and Smith is no where near as charming to pull it off, so I found it distracting. I did like Amelia and think she’ll be great and the story of how they met and the time that passed was good.
Good stories will bring this all around and hopefully Matt Smith will come into his own.
Actually more impressed with Matt Smith, and the characters, than I was with the plot itself. It was nice a quirky, but an old familiar story done dozens of times before. It was like Moffat was consciously trying to pen a Davies script, which was a nice way to transition.
Can’t wait for the more original and out there stuff to come, though.
Matt Smith just didn’t cut it for me. He is a far cry from David Tennant. I was disappointed I have to say. I’m a big Dr. Who fan.
I loved it.
I think Matt is bloody good, and the sooner they get going again with more adventure’s the better.
There is a slight hump of getting us used to him, and they passed with flying colours.
I also loved how it’s slightly more adult, but without using any words the kids might ask about.
Davies pandard to his inner child, and the child audience far to much. Moffat was the best writer, on his single parter’s anyway, just because he scared the crap out of the kids. And adults for that matter.
The weeping angel’s were amazing. I just hope they aren’t ruined by a return showing.
It had story elements from Smith and Jones, Girl in the Fireplace and Blink, but added up to a great episode. Tennant always made me cringe at least once an episode, that didn’t really happen here. I think Smith gave a great performance, but readers of Culch.ie will know I was never in any doubt that he would.
I’m not too comfortable with the Doctor grooming children into a lifelong fascination with him that he exploits in adulthood though, it’s icky even if it’s unintentional (and I’m beginning to wonder).
The stop motion sequence was just gimmicky and unnecessary, and please god Moffat doesn’t go in for the MASSIVE FORESHADOWING that Davies did, although again, with the Silence is coming, cracks in the universe, something odd on the TARDIS console I think we’re already there.
I’m not sure if Doctor Who is on the televesion in the US. I did catch some of Tennant’s version via Culch.ie but I have not watched the show since it was on PBS when Tom Baker had his run.
Must be available online somewhere, does anyone have a link ? thanks
@Keleher it’s on BBC America.
I loved it. Thought he did a great job. When i saw him in interview earlier in the year i did not like him and was worried but i totally enjoyed the show.
In relation to a bit like David Tennant, I thougt that too but i also thought he had to be for the next few episodes as he has to slowly chance the character to his own.
I watched the first three episodes so far. I’m a little disappointed with them especially the last one. David Tennant seemed to give it a razzle dazzle that made it work, that made it credible but to see Matt Smith shouting at the Dalek telling them they were the most evil things in the universe almost made me laugh. They are cones on wheels with a plunger coming out of them. Tacky.
I also so find myself wondering where his eyebrows are gone. There hardly there at all. One of the side effects of regeneration, I suppose.
