Album Review: Laura Marling – I Speak Because I Can

Laura Marling was just 16 when she started making a name for herself on the London folk circuit. At 18 she was nominated for the Mercury Prize for her debut album, “Alas I Cannot Swim” and now at the grand old age of 20 she releases her second album, “I Speak Because I Can”. In truth there is nothing ground breaking here. We’ve heard it all before. Whether it is Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell or even Beth Orton, you can make comparisons to dozens of artists that have treaded this ground before. But that’s not really the point with this album. Not everyone can push new boundaries and not everybody should. What Marling has created here is a coherent, consistent and charming set of songs, tied together by her often stunning vocals. Don’t waste your time picking over the influences, just enjoy it for what it is.

Competition Closed: A Mug’s Game?

**Competition Closed** Congrats Lottie and Davin. Irish Grub In A Mug, a gift book hot off the presses at Gill & MacMillan in the last few weeks, made it’s way into Team Culch’s hands recently. It’s a dinky wee thing that doubles as a fridge magnet with ten recipes for Irish dishes that can be cooked in a mug in the microwave and in our eyes it had the word ‘challenge’ written all over it. Five Culchies have tried out five recipes from the book, so have a read about what they have to say about microwaved mug meals and stick around to enter the competition if you’re brave enough - we have two copies to give away.

Album Review: We Have Band - ‘WHB’

WHBPackshot

Winners of the Emerging Talent Competition at 2009’s Glastonbury Festival, disco-rockers We Have Band have gradually garnered a lot of attention in the run-up to their debut release. The back story alone is enough to intrigue – three ex-employees of EMI, with little experience between them, decide to get together to make an album free of record label influence. Two years (and a lot of buzz) later, the debut offering from We Have Band has landed… There’s more

Sweary’s Jaw

Surreptitiously wringing hands for Lenny and Dawn, so you don’t have to. We’ve got a lot to get through this week, so I’m going to get you lot settled with something cunningly brainless, to set the tone, to lighten the mood. You know, give you lot the bloggy equivalent of a sensual neckrub. Yeah? Coz if this doesn’t get you going, I don’t know what will. Now, what’s all that unidentified white powder coming out of Lindsay Lohan’s shoes? Is it (a) Dhrugs, dhrugs, terrible dhrugs? (b) The residue of her SOUL? (c) Probably talcum powder, but really, how is that an advisable clog insert when you’ve got a reputation for being the most fragile party casualty in town? Honestly, Lindsay! Wardrobe! Yes, prepare to overdose on stupidity, because Sweary’s Jaw is chock-to-da-block with it this week, and not just in my clunky prose.
