Competition Closed: Win Tickets For Kele Okereke At The Academy

*** Competition Now Closed *** *** Congratulations to ruthieor and thanks to everyone who entered! *** What could be more thrilling than getting a special, intimate preview of his new album at Kele Okereke’s first solo tour? Why, being there compliments of Culch.ie, sillies! Kele Okereke is, of course, Bloc Party’s frontman - enigmatic, a bit of a smartarse, and rather funky to boot. With Bloc Party on hiatus (something even a taskmaster like me can forgive them for, such was the quality and quantity of their output in the last five years), he’s been in the studio, putting together his solo album. It’s called The Boxer, and it’s released on 21st June, with first single Tenderoni released on June 14th. The Boxer promises to blur the distinction between cerebral pop and dance music, something that gets this glowstick graduate very hot under the neon collar indeed. Bloc Party are, … There’s more

In Handel’s Day

After the 250th Handel celebrations last year, it has quickly rolled around to that time of year again. Tomorrow, 13th April Dublin will celebrate In Handel’s Day. Last year I was lucky enough to go to the live performance of Handel’s Messiah in full in Christ Church Cathedral and it was a beautiful, almost surreal experience, thanks in no small part to the wonderful choir as well as the extraordinary setting. Tomorrow will see the most famous celebration, Messiah on the Street take place at 1pm on Fishamble Street, Dublin 2 performed by Our Lady’s Choral Society. The reason for the unusual location is that the Messiah (excerpts of) is performed outside the building where it was first performed in 1742. There are also two Handel-themed walking tours tomorrow, one at 11am with well known Dublin historian Pat Liddy, ending up at the Messiah on the Street for 1pm and … There’s more

Ken, Meet Barbie; Barbie, Meet Ken

Can you believe it’s 15 years since we first met Woody and Buzz. Toy Story was such a big part of my childhood - but I was already in my teens when it first came out in 1995. Proof that it truly was a film for all ages. Then in 1999, rather than release a throwaway sequel, Pixar and Disney created Toy Story 2, a follow up story that bettered the original. It was intelligent and touched on themes of abandonment, love and identity. So, 10 years on, is there still a place for Woody and Buzz in our lives? Andy has grown up and become a young man. He has put away childish things. Should we be doing the same? Should we leave Toy Story 3 to the kiddies and spend our cinema money on Meryl Streep dramas and James Cameron epics? Watch this and then decide. It’s the … There’s more

The most disturbing movie you’ll see this year

Note from the editor : This is definitely NSFW. Now I am not one for Horror movies, or even the sub-genre of Body horror or Gore Porn. But this latest trailer is utterly disturbing. The Human Centipede Now the premise is flimsy at best. Backpackers breakdown, they’re 2 young american’s lost in Germany. They find a house. A mad doctor lives there. They wake up chained to a bed. The mad doctor has a utterly disturbing plan to scare the bejaysus out of the audience. Cue a lot of horrifying images, and most likely acting. Make people get sick, sell more tickets than popcorn. Why anyone thought this movie was a good idea is beyond me. It’s just completely wrong! On many many levels. Although saying that, it is tempting to see it at some stage, to ye know, be as outraged and appalled as I think I should be…
