It was probably greeted with a collective “meh” by the majority, but the news emerged a couple of days ago that Supergrass have called it quits. The band cited musical differences as the main reason behind the split.
We still love each other but, cliché notwithstanding, musical differences have led to us moving on and of course we all wish each other well in the future.
While they may have slipped off the mainstream radar over the last couple of years it’s worth remembering that Supergrass produced some truly outstanding albums that still stand up long after the death of the Britpop scene from which they emerged. In fact I would wager that anyone with even a passing interest in music can probably hum the tune of three or four different Supergrass songs.
In an industry where most people take themselves far too seriously Supergrass were a breath of fresh air, a giddy, carefree and joyous blast of pop rock. Check out the videos below for a little reminder.
They are one of the most underrated bands ever. They have made some fantastic albums, Road to Rouen stands out for me. I’ll miss them. They didn’t come to Ireland often enough
I always appreciated Supergrass, but I could never really fall in love with them (too hairy). Having said that, they were a great singles band, as in, they had some immediately recognisable, seriously funky releases over the years. “Alright” is still one of my sunny day songs, and one of the anthems of my teenage years. And I love “Moving”.
Argh! How did this escape my attention. Nobody captured pop rock quite like Supergrass. Very glad I got to see them live when they supported the Arctic Monkeys at Malahide - they had a great response from the crowd as the rolled out hit after hit. You could audibly hear gasps of “oh I forgot this was theirs. And this. And this.” Shame.
