The Black Eyed Peas Kick Off The E.N.D. World Tour

I really didn’t know what to expect from the Black Eyed Peas gig on Saturday night. A friend enticed me along with a free ticket, so I thought, why the hell not. Even the allure of Cheryl Cole as support didn’t get me overly excited about the O2 gig. I’ve never been a BEP fan - I like some of their songs, but I don’t own an album and probably wouldn’t know any of their tracks beyond the big singles. So, imagine my surprise to be completely blown away by an insanely hyper, visually incredible and musically brilliant night out…well, apart from the Cheryl Cole bit. We arrived at the start of Cole’s set. The best we could muster was - “she wasn’t terrible“. The choreography was very poor, the dress change was weak and while a couple of her songs were fun, the live gig added very little to … There’s more

Best Plays Of The Last Decade?

Recently while at the bookshop of the National Theatre in London I noticed this bookshop display. It claimed to be the Best Plays of the Decade. Given that its 2010, it did get me thinking of what the best plays since the millennium were. Included on their list were Plastcine The Seafarer Pornogrphy Stockholm blue/orange The Pride Our Crisis Taking Care of Baby August On Stage Country Obviously these are taken from a UK point of view but I really agree with The Seafarer (National’s Production at least) and Pornogrphy. I would also include Freefall ( Best Irish show of last year imo) The Pillowman, Improbable Frequency, The Wallworth Farce and Seawall. So what do you think? What have you seen that has blown you away?

For a sampler, here’s new single Watercolour… … which marks a welcome return … There’s more

Chalks - The Complex, Smithfield

Week one of the International Gay Theatre Festival (the one without the vodka) is well under way. Last night saw the premiere of Patrick Kinsella’s new play, Chalks, in The Complex in Smithfield. In Chalks, Graham Quinn (played by Darren Killeen) is a successful artist who has lost his inspiration and interest in life. He meets David (Eddie Jackson), a handsome young street artist who draws in chalks on the pavement. Captivated by the young man’s looks and artistic passion, he invites him to work with him, believing that the jealousy he feels for David’s youth and talent will fuel him with enough emotion to get his inspiration back. As both artists relationship develops through their art, David’s feelings for Grace (Jennifer English), a young life model, turns Graham’s admiration into dark desire. Directed by the lovely Siobháin O’Brien, desire, eroticism and jealously are at the root of Kinsella’s play. … There’s more
