Broken Spine #25: One Book, One Twitter

Many of you may have read Dracula or Dorian Grey as part of Dublin’s One City, One Book month this year or last. But now a bigger event is trundling into town…every town. One Book, One Twitter began yesterday, and is the brainchild of Crowdsourcing author Jeff Howe. The book chosen was decided by a public vote (which for once wasn’t rigged by Irish voters to be Roy Keane’s Biography or the like), and Neil Gaiman’s American Gods beat off stiff competition from Slaughterhouse Five, Farenheit 451, Song of Solomon, and The God of Small Things.

Four Lions: review

I saw a preview of the new Chris Morris’ new film Four Lions, opening 7 May (thank you Element Pictures). I’m not sure that I have seen any of Chris Morris’ other films before so I can’t compare them. However, I’ll do my best to review it as the stand alone film that it is. Four Lions is set in a UK suburb and centres on Omar, a young Pakistani man (played by the very talented Riz Ahmed), married with one son, who has rounded up a group of friends to fight ‘the cause’ with him. The film follows their trials and tribulations in trying to get permission to carry on the cause in the UK, to get trained in Pakistan and how they get their plan together in London. It is the story of these five young suicide bombers.

The Back-up Plan

Zoe (Jennifer Lopez) wants a baby. Her body clock is ticking, she’s seeing babies everywhere and nothing is going to stop her having one- not even the absence of a partner. The film opens with Zoe being impregnated by a doctor through artificial insemination. She walks out of the doctor’s office and into a fight over a taxi with a hunky male. In case you’re wondering, the storyline doesn’t get any less ridiculous. There’s no guesswork about what will happen next. Her squeeze Stan is played by Alex O’Loughlin and judging by this film alone, I think he’s a terrible actor. Sure, he’s got the look but I wasn’t doing any melting for him, in fact I hated him. Of course, the insemination works, Zoe is pregnant but she has just starting falling for Stan. He is dazed by the discovery of the pregnancy, torn between his feelings for her … There’s more

Florence + The Machine @ The Olympia, Monday 3rd May

Florence

When Florence and her mighty machine roll into town they certainly don’t do so quietly. The May bank holiday weekend double-header at the Olympia was preceded by what can only be described as a ticket FRENZY. It is testament to the band’s artistic integrity that they’re taking to the stage in the intimate surrounds of the Olympia – truth be told, they probably could’ve packed out the O2 for a night or two given the chance. With all tickets for the two dates having been sold within mere seconds of going on sale, there was an air of gratefulness amongst the capacity crowd in the Olympia on Monday night – happy to be there, and expecting greatness.
