A Nightmare on Elm Street: A Review

Released: Out Now Cert: 16 There is something inherently exciting about remakes of classic horror films for me. So with the announcement of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ yet another Michael Bay produced horror, I was hooked. The original ‘Elm Street’ (1984) movie is considered by many to be a horror classic and kick-started the career of horror veteran Wes Craven. Yet these remakes can go either way, ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ brought a fresh approach and stunning suspense while ‘Friday the 13th’ did not live up to it’s potential. So which camp does this nightmare fall into?? ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ tells the story of a group of teenagers being stalked by a killer in their dreams. We follow Nancy, a girl who realizes that she and her friends are being stalked by the same crazed killer, a burnt and disfigured man named Freddy. When one of her friends … There’s more

Dublin Dance Festival

The Dublin Dance Festival kicked off last Saturday evening with the first performance of Five Ways to Drown followed by the Bumper 2 Bumper headphone disco in conjunction with Phantom 105.2fm. Five Ways To Drown in the Project Arts Centre was choreographed and performed by Junk Ensemble. Junk Ensemble was established in 2004 by twin sisters Megan and Jessica Kennedy who were also joined in this performance by three other dancers. Five Ways To Drown is listed as something which: “looks into the interior of people’s lives and exposes the sadness, the absurdity and the banality through vignettes of dance and installation” The set in the Project was amazing, with the upstairs area having been transformed to have a central stage with a specially built staircase and the stage even had real grass! Alas, I had never been to see contemporary dance in this kind of format and I didn’t … There’s more

Robin Hood - A Review

Robin Hood is one of those enduring characters of English legend. His cunning, his daring, his leadership and friendship and of course his love affair with the fair Maid Marion is a story that has survived retelling for hundreds of years. Such a story and such a man is ideal for Hollywood film-makers in search of inspiration and so there have been countless movies and TV series’ charting his exploits and those of his Merry Men. That brings us to yet another big-screen version brought to us this time by the men responsible for Gladiator. So then more men in trees with bows and arrows and ill-fitting tights? Not entirely, this Robin is definitely a horse of a different colour.

Review: High Violet - The National

When it comes to weighing up the possibilities in any new social interaction, there are certain parameters I’ve come to rely heavily on, badges or beliefs or gentle oddities that tell me whereabouts on my Compatability Grid to place a would-be buddy. Are they strangers to the orderliness of proper punctuation? Do they laugh at my How-did-Bono-fall-off-the-stage-He-got-too-close-to-the-edge joke? And have they heard The National? Whether they like The National tends not to be significant - anyone who’s heard The National loves The National. Isn’t it a funny thing? Floundering in ignorance to misty-eyed zealot in the blink of an album; they really are that good. Not surprising, then, that the release of High Violet has been greeted with elation and relief in almost equal measure; it’s definitely been the most eagerly awaited album of 2010, if pub conversation and LastFM flaming sessions are anything to go by. This is The … There’s more
