Karen Elson is a Ghost Girl Walking

Karen Elson’s career has been somewhat of a rollercoaster. The International redhead model who hails from Oldham, Manchester also helped found New York cabaret stars the Citizens Band and has dueted with the likes of Amanda Palmer and even provided vocals for Robert Plant in 2003. ‘The Ghost Who Walks’ sees Elson go it solo. With production God Jack White for a husband, who also happens to own and run his own record label; Third Man Records, the time is ripe for Elson to launch her solo musical career. The disc is out on May 21st and will be released on standard CD/Vinyl. There is also a special edition to be released on peach coloured and scented vinyl. The album opens with the title track, which is a bleak tale of a girl murdered by her lover. Melancholic will definitely be over-used to describe Elson’s style. Musically the album is … There’s more

Review: The Losers

The Losers is an adaptation of the comic series which I know little about. I think this review might be completely different coming from a fan of the comic that brought about this film so keep in mind that I’m treating this as a completely separate entity. The Losers is an action packed romp with a lot of explosions, chases and some good ol’ watered down violence. The plot centers around a Special Ops force who are in Bolivia to kill a target. They soon realize they are actually the target as they are framed for a crime by a a rich, powerful villain by the name of Max. Max is played by Jason Patric who appears to be trying to break out of his ‘good guy’ comfort zone. The five members of the gang all have their own niche talent. Clay is the leader of the gang played by … There’s more

RTÉ Guide “Become a Star” Roadshow (a.k.a. Miriam O’Callaghan, eat your heart out)

It’s always been the standard by which fame is judged. “Have you been on the cover of the RTÉ Guide?” “No…” “Well then you’re clearly not famous. Back of the queue.” The RTÉ Guide are cleverly capitalising on the secret lust for fame of the Irish people with their new “Become a Star” roadshow, which took place in Limerick yesterday and today, and heads to Waterford (City Square S. C. Thursday) next weekend, Thursday 27th and Friday 28th May. From 12 - 6 each day, if you bring a proof of purchase of the RTÉ Guide to the helpful folk at the booth, they will take your photo (with the white background and the fancy umbrella things and the whole lot), superimpose it onto the Guide cover of your choice, and then print it out for you to take home for your Mammy to frame. I was there not long … There’s more

The No Pricks Comedy Show (May 25th)

Jarlath O’Regan’s comedy showcase returns to Slattery’s of Rathmines on Tuesday May 25th at 8pm it’s the first show of the new season and the stellar line-up as always is a secret. The show was set up in 2007 to show case some of Irelands top comics. On just before the Edinburgh fringe, this show gives the comics a chance to try out their new jokes on the unsuspecting public before they head over to Scotland. For the first time this show has an admission fee of only a €5 which isn’t too bad, considering. There’s usually a raffle in the interval but this is due mainly to the fact that the shows creator and M.C. Jarlaith O’Regan needs to get rid of crap stuff around his house! “For the past 3 years the show has given people like David O’Doherty, Ardal O’Hanlon, Barry Murphy, Karl Spain and Dead Cat … There’s more

The best free n’ easy music downloads on the webbly this week. They say that if you love something, you’ve got to set it free. It didn’t work well with my canary, but my mournful tales won’t garner any attention from the music community, which is all the better to feed your lugs with, isn’t it? Here’s a sampler of the lovely teasers available from talented so and sos this week. By now I hope you’ve all had a lovely listen to Band Of Horses’ new album, Infinite Arms. It’s streaming in its entirety here, and it’s certainly more worthy of your time than that hour you were going to spend watching Scrubs reruns and eating droopy oven chips. Perfect if you like your indie-rock floaty and your musicians beardier than an Amish werewolf. I’m being facetious; Infinite Arms really is a fantastic listen. Available everywhere now.
