Millions of us fly from one point to another across the globe on a daily basis. Most would rather be spending time with their feet firmly on the ground, with their families, friends and loved ones. For Ryan Bingham, the opposite is true - he wants to be Up in the Air. Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) fires people for a living. He can’t truly understand what it’s like for these people because he spends so much time on an airplane and in hotels - he’s never connected with another human being in a meaningful way. All of that changes when a young corporate ingenue (Anna Kendrick) positions a new concept to his boss (Jason Bateman) that would reduce expenditures and bring the company’s employees home to their families. New Releases M.I.A will release her new album ‘/\/\/\Y/\’ in Ireland on the 9th of July, and no that’s not some weird glitch on Culch.ie the album is actually titled ‘/\/\/\Y/\’. In another seemingly random amalgamation of letters and symbols XXXO will be the first single. http://www.miauk.com/ Thought you had heard the last of Oasis? Not by a long shot. They are releasing a new singles collection on the 11th of June. ‘Time Flies… 1994-2009’ features all of the band’s singles. Unfortunately Oasis “will not be available for interviews” as they split up last year. http://www.oasisinet.com/ I consider Neil Hannon to be the anti-Bono, in that he is witty and a good songwriter and he doesn’t have his head shoved up his own arse and I don’t hate him. The Dublin Writers Festival, now in its 12th year, returns to our fair city on the 1st June for 6 days of literary celebration, featuring over 40 writers who will read from their most recent works and take part in conversations about their writing. This year’s theme centres on “the power of words” and highlights include Atonement writer, Ian McEwan; Star of the Sea author, Joseph O’Connor, and the Irish treasure, Seamus Heaney. New initiatives in 2010 include a exploration of song writing with Paul Brady and Neil Hannon in performance and conversation with John Kelly and insights into the art of reading well from Anne Enright and Dermot Healy. Rounding off the jam-packed programme will be discussions on the new feminism, the ‘tricky’ second novel, a detailed exploration of Irish language travel literature and a multimedia bilingual event featuring poetry, song and projections.
