Competition Closed: Glorious Glória

*** Competition Closed *** *** Congratulations to John Mac *** Here’s a gig I’m really looking forward to catching on Saturday night. Glória, Dublin’s Lesbian and Gay Choir, celebrate 15 years of singing together in the National Concert Hall. Glória was founded in October 1995. An ad placed in GCN invited singers interested in forming a choir. About 25 people came along on that first night – some of whom still sing with the choir – and today the choir has a singing membership of 50. The choir’s repertoire is wide ranging. The songs are chosen sometimes to surprise, sometimes to challenge, but always to entertain. Performing works from John Rutter’s spectacular Glória, excerpts from Carmina Burana (think Old Spice!) right through to songs from Glee, Funny Girl, The Wizard of Oz and Dolly Parton. Here’s a little sample of their Perfect Day…

Yes you read correctly, midnight. So grab your loud floral shirts and fishing hats and head to the Academy to hear the best renditions of ‘Fools Gold‘ and ‘I Am the Resurrection‘ only short of Ian Brown and the lads themselves. Tickets for the show are priced at €16.50 including booking fee

Freshly Seized

The best free n’ easy music downloads on the webbly this week. In the manner of things that are free n’ easy, this week’s downloads are also chilled and floaty! Isn’t that nice and evocative? Free love, free music, barefoot and shimmying your … er, browser off. How summery of me (just don’t look outside). This one’s from a young wan called Lail Arad, who’s rather the little smartarse. The song’s called Everyone Is Moving To Berlin, possibly for the Love Parade, which would really suit the theme of this week’s post, wouldn’t it? The song is quirky and funny and pretty, a bit like I’d imagine Sandi Thom would sound if she was any good. It also mentions bloggers, which is sufficiently ego-stroking for us. Get in! From quirky-sweet to quirky-help-I’m-a-little-unnerved, this next one’s from a lady called Catherine A.D. Catherine’s been name-checked by everyone from David Gilmour to … There’s more

Competition Closed: Ross O’Carroll-Kelly, Midnight Poe and The Happy Prince at Dalkey Book Festival

**Competition Closed - Winners will be contacted** Summertime and the living is easy…local towns and villages are coming up trumps with the usual round of summer festivals and this year there’s a brand spanking new one to add to the calendar. Hold onto your hats, I’m about to sing the praises of one of them like the inky-fingered book geek that I am. The first Dalkey Book Festival kicks off on Friday June 18th and runs until Sunday 20th and their programme of events is worth getting excited about. If you’re the bookworm kind, it has all of the expected elements of a book fest with talks from Marita Conlon-McKenna (she of Under the Hawthorne Tree) on writing for children, John Connolly and Declan Hughes on 10 Crime Novels to Read Before You Die, Conor McPherson on Writing for the Stage and of course Dalkey’s most famous writer in residence … There’s more

Competition Closed: Win family tickets to Dublinia

*** Competition Closed *** To celebrate the recent renovation of Dublinia and the opening of a new exhibition, History Hunters, Dublinia and Conway Communications have kindly offered us 3 family tickets (two adults, two children) to give away to three lucky Culch readers. In case you haven’t heard of it, Dublinia is Ireland’s only Viking Medieval Heritage Centre located in the Christ Church area of Dublin. As part of the relaunch I got to visit Dublinia (for the first time ever!) and was really impressed. I can imagine taking a few kids there and them being totally engrossed in the life-like displays of huts, homes, market places and of course the real life Viking guides! The whole experience is multi-media, tactile and engaging and invites questions and participation from people rather than just viewing like in a museum. You’ll find out interesting nuggets of information, like the fact that many … There’s more

Ad Nauseam: World Cup ads 2010

If you’re involved in the production of beer, fast food or computer games it’s seriously important to your business. It makes the whole world jolt to stop, and head for the pub. And it only comes around once every four years. Yes, it’s the World Cup. Probably the only global sporting event to encourage behaviour so diametrically opposed to the fitness and skill played out on the pitch. It’s a truth universally acknowledged that where there is a large sporting event, there are advertisers. And the World Cup is perhaps the biggest of them all. Now I’m not dissing the Olympics - I could watch the Olympics all year long if you provided enough tea, biscuits and bed sore cushions. Everyone loves the Olympics. Go on, admit it; it brought a tear to your eye to see Michelle de Bruin (that’s de Bruin now, de Bruin, not Smith) bring home … There’s more

Miike Snow’s new video features Destiny’s Child’s ghettofabulous twins

These are good days for pop music; we have Lady Gaga blazing a trail for the interesting and provocative, Plan B shaking things up with Streets-esque tunes and some great home-grown music from the likes of Two Door Cinema Club. Miike Snow joined the pop party last year with their eponymous début featuring the insanely catchy Animal. This trio of Swedes were no fresh-faced talent competition winners though. Veterans of the scene both as musicians and producers they knew exactly what was needed to break into the charts. The band are currently “pulling a Lady Gaga” by re-releasing a deluxe edition of their début which will include two remixes of past songs, a brand new single called The Rabbit and a remix of this new single by 2007-golden-boy-producer-and-go-to-man-of-the-year winner Mark Ronson. Miike Snow clearly have producer-friends in high places; the original version of The Rabbit has Stuart Price at the controls (Madonna, … There’s more
