“A man loves his girlfriend the most, his wife the best, but his mother the longest.” Old Irish Proverb.
Last night myself and Kitty went to the IFI to see the new film by Ken Wardrop, (Undressing My Mother, The Herd) “His & Hers”. This film is pure genius in it’s simplicity. It goes from laugh out loud moments to moments of total heart ache.
The film goes through about 70 women chatting about the men in their lives, Fathers, boyfriends, husbands, sons. It starts with 4 year old Emily Rose talking about her daddy and goes right up to 80 year old Kitty talking about her sons and husband. The genius of this film is it’s simplicity and as a woman I found myself identifying with a lot of it. That’s not to say that men won’t get as much out of this film as I did, the men that are talked about are the main characters even though we don’t see them. I thought this was very clever, as in my head when the ladies were chatting about their men I was imagining my dad and my boyfriend and so it was the one love story woven throughout. Beautifully shot and so natural you almost forget your in a cinema but instead your transported to the kitchens, the bedrooms and the halls, and your having a cup of tea and a chat with your sister or friend or indeed your mammy.
His & Hers has won numerous awards on the film festival circuit and rightly so. I can’t recommend this film enough it so wonderful, and trust me you will want to call your mam straight after!
It opens this weekend across Ireland.
I gave my mam a big hug after it, proper heart tugging stuff.
