The hills of county Wicklow are soon to be alive – once more – with the sound of music. Calary church provides a beautiful backdrop for this year’s series of classical recitals. Calary church was built between 1832 and 1834, in the later English style, and each summer the church hosts home-grown and international stars from the world of classical music.
This summer, Fiachra Garvey and Ruth Gibson will open the series on July 9th. Their programme will feature three sonatas for Viola & Piano, which promise to be excellently and passionately performed. Garvey & Gibson have been playing together, on and off, for the last five years, and neither is a stranger to the surrounds of Calary, both having played there on numerous occasions.
They began working together with Paul Grennan and Gina McGuinness in the piano quartet Fiparugi, and though the four went their separate ways (Grennan now studies in Manchester, Gibson initially moved to RNCM and now studies under the renowned Lawrence Power, while Garvey has spent the last year studying under Jacques Rouvier in Paris), Gibson and Garvey have kept in touch and are looking forward to returning to Calary for another concert which promises a showcase of the energy and passion with which both performers approach their art.
The concert will, as always, be followed up with light refreshments served in the Church Garden. Though an enchanting location, the midges can become quite vexing, so a hat is a must!
The Calary Concert Series begins on July 9th in Calary Parish Church (between Kilmacanogue & Roundwood) Co Wicklow at 8pm. More information can be found here, a map of the church location can be found here.
