With the plethora of festivals such as ‘Oxegen’ and ‘Electric Picnic’ being the talk of Irish summer, it can be easy to let some of the other great entertainment pass you by.
From Thursday 22nd to Sunday 25th of July, the ‘Carlsberg Comedy Carnival’ will bring some of the best stand-up talent in the world to Dublin. This year the line-up includes such notable names as Tommy Tiernan, Des Bishop, Colin Murphy, Bo Burnham, Ardal O’Hanlon and Reginald D. Hunter. It takes place in the Iveagh Gardens and with the right weather, it could make for a wonderful time.
Whilst I am very impressed with the line-up overall, there are a couple of performers that I will certainly be making a point to go see:
Des Bishop: Arguably the best comedy talent in the country. Bishops astute observations about the Irish and our culture always make for a both fascinating and hilarious mix. Not to mention, he has the best grasp of accents I have ever seen.
Bo Burnham: I’m not going to lie, I hate YouTube!! It is awash with so much contrived crap! But every now and then, it opens your eyes to some great stuff and for me; Bo Burnham is top of the list. After watching most of his videos online I went out and bought his EP and it can still consistently cheer me up. He is currently working on a movie with Judd Apatow (Knocked up & 40 year old virgin) and could soon be one of the biggest faces of comedy. A must see.
Ardal O’Hanlon: This comedian/actor is most well known for his role on ‘Father Ted’, but if you have not seen perform stand-up yet, you’re in for a treat. So quick and witty, with an amazing ability to tell funny stories, his live show is something to get excited about.
We at culch will hopefully be attending some of the festival and you can be sure we will have a lot to say about it.
