Milking it for all it’s worth - @MilkFest2010

Earlier today, Eilish had a post up about this Summer’s festivals and her review of the Indiependence Festival in Michelstown. There’s another very unique Irish music festival coming up next weekend. It promises to be brighter, more colourful and a hell of a lot more flamboyant than anything that has come before it. It’s Europe’s First LGBT Music Festival - MILK. Get your diamond encrusted wellington boots at the ready for Europe’s first ever outdoor music and arts festival for the LGBT community. Taking place on Saturday 14th August, in the majestic surroundings of Ballinlough Castle, which will be transformed into a technicoloured dream world for one day of outrageous gay fun, think Wizard Of Oz meets Alice in Wonderland! From 12noon to 12am, 5,000 of Ireland’s gay community and their beautiful straight friends will strut their stuff, as a Mardi Gras Style atmosphere takes over! There’s a great and … There’s more

Review: Indiependence Music Festival, Mitchelstown, 31st July & 1st August 2010

There are many important factors to be considered when choosing a summer music festival to attend – everything from the line-up of acts to the camping facilities to the type of crowd the event will attract – and of course, the price of the ticket to get you in. Hitting the European festivals seems to have become a popular summer activity for Irish music fans who want to be kind to their bank balance by combining holiday & festival as one. But also becoming increasingly popular are the small capacity regional festivals which take place around the country throughout the summer. INDIEPENDENCE is one such festival… There’s more

Knight and Day Review

Knight and Day gives its audience a nice mix of action and romance making it the perfect movie for date night. Directed by James Mangold (Girl Interrupted, Walk the Line), this film revolves around June Havens (Cameron Diaz) a regular wholesome gal on her way home to her sister’s wedding. She meets mysterious yet intriguing stranger Roy Miller (Tom Cruise) at the airport and a spark ignites between them. Unlike most rom-coms, this spark really does appear to be genuine and it is the chemistry between Diaz and Cruise that gives this movie an edge over other dull movies of the same genre. I’ve always liked Cameron Diaz and this movie made me fall in love with her all over again. Her character June Havens suits her perfectly as she seems as surprised as we are to find her ripped out of the rom-com she expected to find herself in … There’s more

Couch Potato Special - Top 20 DVDs of 2010 so far

There’s a good chance that the potato has gone mouldy after sitting, neglected, on the couch for the last few weeks. Time then to open up the windows, let out the smell and crack on with a brand new spud in its place. To make up for this neglect I am going to run down a list of the twenty DVDs that have been released in 2010 that must become part of your collection asap. The catalyst for this decision was the release this week of Shutter Island, the Martin Scorsese helmed, Leonardo DiCaprio starring, masterpiece of modern cinema, on DVD and Blu-ray. Since I view this as an essential purchase I got to wondering what else this year is an absolute must-buy. This list is compiled from the 100+ DVD releases of the year that I have managed to catch either at home or in the cinema and represents … There’s more

Hands on with Kinect

Last week, a few Culchies had the opportunity to preview Xbox’s newest innovation. Stephen has been talking about it all week on ChronicReload, but here’s George’s views on it. Let us know what you think…are you excited or do you feel it’s just another gimmick? - Darren So Microsoft has a new addition for the Xbox 360 and if you missed the hype about it from the last two E3‘s (although it was called Natal at E3 2009) then this (rather sarcastic) parody video should give you an idea about it. Basically it’s Microsoft’s answer to the Wii except you don’t have to hold a controller. In fact your whole body is the controller, except it’s not really, the controller sits in front of the telly and watches your every move and listens to your every word - kinda like a pet puppy except without the cuteness or the random … There’s more

I’d Forgotten How Much I Love Paul Neave…

My smallie (all of eight years, but she’s definitely no biggie) asked me yesterday what was the name of the site I taught her to play Tetris on. It came flooding back to me like a wave of hot, sugary whiskey - Neave. com, one of my favourite sites on the whole wide world wide web. Paul Neave is an interaction designer. He has created the most wonderful clones of classic video games as Tetris, Frogger, and Pac Man - so wonderful, that Tetris have now officially sanctioned his version and brought it into the Tetris family. He also makes some of the most engaging, interactive light shows you are ever likely to see. A planetarium on your browser? The opportunity to doodle in 3D? Neave.com is the best waste of time you could possibly ask for on a Friday afternoon. If this doesn’t make you feel like you’ve just … There’s more

The Screen Cinema- Putting classics back on the big screen

The Screen Cinema is nearing the end of it’s fantastic season of 80s movies, and to round it all off, from August 6th - 12th, they are showing a week of movies celebrating the director synonymous with 80s teen angst – John Hughes. Hughes captured the teen and preteen market during his career as both a writer and director with a chain of 1980s teen movies. Hughes directed such classic teen movies as The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. These films defined the stifling high school experience and even now, almost 25 years after its release, The Breakfast Club is still appreciated by teenagers. Screen Cinema Programmer, Anna Taylor, is delighted to have the opportunity to be the first Irish cinema to honour Hughes and his cinematic legacy; ‘Many of us were heartbroken when John Hughes died so suddenly last year. Whether you saw his films … There’s more
