Review: Ontroerend Goed’s The Smile Off Your Face

Rothe House, High Street, Kilkenny. Friday 6th August 2010, 8pm. I had read on the Kilkenny Arts Festival website about The Smile Off Your Face and had found it intriguing, particularly “You are blindfolded, you are in a wheelchair, tied up. There is no stage.” What could it be? What would happen to me inside the darkness of a blindfold where my imagination and senses of sound and smell were all I had at my disposal? I couldn’t not do it, so I signed up myself and Darragh. The show was free and time slots were going fast. We arrived about 10 minutes early for our 8pm slot but there were very few people around. The serenity of the Rothe House courtyard was perfect for it, there was a spiritual, almost religious feel about everything, people talking quietly about their experience and the experiences of others. If you are interested in music, there is an array of types to choose from at the Kilkenny Arts Festival. Matthew Nolan, a member of musical ensemble 3epkano and a lecturer in Dublin Business School is the curator of the Wired strand, an exploration into various musical genres. It is described on the website as being “like one of those old mix tapes you’d pass around from friend to friend” which is lovely. Here Matthew talks to Ken McGuire about his choices for 2010:

I went to see Inception last week and thought it was brilliant. Before the film, caught some new previews or trailers that looked very good. The Town Directed by Ben Affleck. Starring Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, Pete Postlethwaite and Blake Lively. This is based on a Dennis Lehane book about Charlestown, Massachusetts .. bank robbers, the police, the town’s peoples and I think the code there that no one ever informs on the darker elements without the usual swift and lethal retribution. Tron: Legacy The website is very interesting, click on the image above. The cast includes original Tron actors Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner, and features Olivia Wilde as Quorra, Garrett Hedlunnd as Sam Flynn, Michael Sheen as Castor, and James Frain as Jarvis. GIGS The Milk Festival 2010 is on Saturday 14 August in Ballinlough Castle, Co. Meath. Darren already covered the full line-up. TICKETING There is a fundraiser for Temple Street Hospital on Saturday 28 August in McGrattan’s, 76 Fitzwilliam Lane, Off Lower Baggot Street, Dublin 2. Depressingly its a 90s theme disco. I didn’t think the 90s were retro already. Finally making it to Ireland after a sell out UK tour and the release of their third album,Winter of Mixed Drinks, Frightened Rabbit have announced details of a headline show in the Academy, Dublin on Thursday 9th December. Tickets went on sale this Thursday, 5th August. Boyce Avenue is a Florida-based band with strong acoustic roots and melodic rock sound.
