I’m off to The Gaiety School of Acting Adult Drama Course

Oh yes, it’s true, there was once a time when I was shy and retiring, when I’d sooner hide in the background than stand out in the crowd. Nothing like the noisy irritant I am today.

Then a girl who I had a crush on (I thought I was in love) dragged me along to an evening drama course. On the first evening, so much did I blend into the surroundings, the teacher didn’t even notice me sitting there and skipped over my introduction, while everyone else gave their name and reason for doing the course. However, by the end of the course, I was a different person. I had found a confidence I never knew existed; I was performing (badly, granted) in front of a crowd of people; my head was held high and it marked a new turning point for me.

Now, I’m not suggesting everyone will have as dramatic a reaction as me by participating in an evening acting course, but I would certainly recommend it.

The Gaiety School of Acting is at the end of their run of Summer Evening Courses and has invited me along to do their Adult Drama Course (Introduction to Drama) over the next three weeks. I’ll be honest, I’m very excited about it.

I am this nervous!!!

I am this nervous!!!

This is their most popular summer course and is led by experienced professional, Gene Rooney, who will establish a strong and supportive group dynamic from which the key aspects of the craft of acting are explored. So says the blurb.

They say it will be a practical, enjoyable and confidence building course which introduces participants to the craft of acting and improvisation. I’ll be keeping you updated on my progress over the next three weeks, so wish me luck. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit nervous. Improv? Me? Eek!

It’s a course for everyone, with no previous experience necessary, so it’ll be interesting to see how I get on.

I’ll be attending three evenings a week over the next three weeks and if you’re interested in knowing more about this course or any of the excellent courses on offer at the Gaiety School of Acting including From Page to Stage, Stage Combat, Write To Act, Acting For Camera, Singing For Musical Theatre and plenty more, please check out their website. Their Winter Courses will kick off in October, so you have plenty of time to pluck up some courage between now and then.

I have to move back to Dublin to do this. I’ve never acted, but I’d say it’d be great fun.
