GIGS
Guillemots Frontman Fyfe Dangerfield sounds like he escaped form a 1940′s adventure series rvaling Biggles but he performs. After his band’s “Red” album he started working on his solo debut release called Fly Yellow Moon. He is a fast worker and recorded the ten tracks in five days in the Urchin Studios, London. Anyway, with the album recorded, the promotion tour starts and he plays the Speakeasy, Belfast in Saturday October 2nd and The Academy, Dublin on Sunday 3rd.
In support of their False Priest album of Montreal are playing Tripod, Dublin on Sunday October 3rd. Of Montreal is an odd bird of a group, with their frontman Kevin Barnes showing up on the children’s show Yo Gabba Gabba, in collaborations with Spike Jonze, on stage spanking pigs with Susan Sarandon, and even spontaneously performing six songs nude during a concert in Las Vegas. No guarantee of spankings or low hanging Barnes on their Dublin date. More interestingly (to me at least) is that False Priest features guest spots from Solange Knowles (Beyonce’s sister) and Janelle Monáe (whose latest record, The ArchAndroid, Barnes guests on).
Saturday 2 October sees the start of Cathy Davey’s promotional tour for her third album “The Nameless” in Glor, Ennis. First signed by Parlophone’s Regal Recordings after a batch of home-recorded demos caused a bit of a stir, and played her first live date shortly thereafter. With time, as Cathy managed to wriggle out of the indie-rock role that Parlophone had given her. The Nameless has more of Cathy’s personality in it than any of her previous work. There’s a darkness here that is more prominent than before, but it’s coupled with songs as fine as anything she’s ever written. Lead single Little Red is the kind of song that could be adopted as a new national anthem. She’s brought back members of her band too: Conor J. O’Brien has returned to play some guitar and some drums, taking a break from recording his début album as Villagers (but no word yet if he’s on tour with her).
Canadian roots-rock band Blue Rodeo return for a pair of Irish dates in late September in support of their album The Things We Left Behind, which was released earlier this year. Blue Rodeo is among the most accomplished groups Canada has produced. The band has won 12 Juno Awards, including a record breaking 5 Group of the Year Junos. Blue Rodeo won the 2008 Juno for Best Group, Best Adult Alternative Album & Best Video and received a Star on Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2009. Watch the video for Blue Rodeo’s Arizona Dust below. The dates are Monday 27 September in Whelan’s, Dublin and Tuesday 28 September in The Errigle Inn, Belfast.
Dundalk based Blind Pilots formed as a quartet of sixteen year old schoolboys with aspirations of making atmospheric indie-pop with a nostalgic tinge. Now they are 21 as comparatively auld fellas at the age of 21. They released their AA single (that’s Double A I think) in The Spirit Store, Dundalk, Co. Louth, on Saturday 28 August. Following on from both positive audience reaction on the night and positive online reaction Blind Pilots have decided to make the two tracks Rosé Cheeks and Cocktail available for free for the foreseeable future.
Speaking on behalf of the band drummer Gavin Murray said “We don’t feel it right to put a price on tag an audio file which we want as many people as possible to hear. Also it’s a token of our gratitude to our fans, many of which have stood by us for a long time.”
They play The Stables, Mullingar, Westmeath on Friday 17 September and Bakers, Limerick (with Fighting with Wire) on Monday 27 September.
And if you want to try before you download, here they are…

Neil Hannon brings a very special The Divine Comedy show to the Olympia Theatre, Dublin on Thursday 30 September. The fully seated performance will see Hannon play a stripped down set featuring the bands many hits coupled with songs from his latest offering “Bang Goes The Knighthood”.
When Derek Nally, popular promoter, manager and raconteur, died of a heart attack in July his sudden passing sent shockwaves throughout the entire Irish music community. Derek worked with the great and the good over the years. Derek was particularly generous with his time when it came to offering advice to up and coming musicians, promoters and managers. Some of Derek’s numerous friends and associates will gather in Vicar St, Dublin on Saturday 2 October to present a fitting musical tribute to a great man entitled Songs for Derek. Artists confirmed to appear include: Howe Gelb, Bell X1 (acoustic), Mundy, Richie Egan (Jape/The Redneck Manifesto), David Kitt, The Walls, Freddie White, Tír na nÓg and James Vincent McMorrow. All proceeds will be donated to the Nally family.
