Competition CLOSED: Are You Afraid of the Farm?

***Competition closed. Winners will be notified*** Farmaphobia, -n, an abnormal fear of farms. Real word? No. Real event? Hell yes. The Causey farm in Co Meath are laying on a Halloween spectacular this year in the form of Farmaphobia, an event designed to terrify, and it sounds like they really mean business. There are no children allowed, they advise that there are no refunds for being too scared and a 100-minute visit billed as “one event - countless disturbing experiences” features a haunted house, Prison Camp truck, Bone Valley Graveyard and an eerie maze. Think you’d like to take up the challenge of surviving the almost two hours of terror without peeing your pants or running home to your mammy? I love Bank Holidays

I love my long weekends - the thought of getting to finish early on a Friday, filling up the weekend with fun stuff, spending Monday recovering and catching up on TV and then only a 4-day week before the next weekend - what could be better? How about kicking off the weekend with a party? Every Good Friday, that’s exactly what I do and it’s become a fun tradition to kick off the spring/summer season. It can take a fair amount of planning and preparation in the weeks beforehand! And A Jingly Jangly Darwin Deez To You Too, Paddy!

… aaaaand we’re over the hump of the week. Happy Wednesday afternoon, everyone! This week’s celebratory melody comes from Mr. Darwin Deez, and though he looks like a 70′s PE teacher mating with a hedge, I do hope you’re not alarmed. This is the fantastic Constellations, which is special because it’s getting an Irish release this coming Friday, ahead of Darwin’s November tour dates. He plays the Roisin Dubh in Galway on the 7th, Cyprus Avenue in Cork on the 8th, and The Academy in Dublin on the 9th. Pop goes my pop-o-meter, so it’s nicely primed for the bank holiday weekend. Thank you, Mr. “tap-dancing hipster troubadour” (Christ) Darwin Deez!

Live Review: Jay Brannan @ Crawdaddy, Saturday 16th October

Jay Brannan is a rare breed of musician. The New York native has successfully made a career for himself in music, without any of the common tools of the industry at his disposal. Brannan is entirely independent – he writes his own songs, finances the production of his music himself, uses YouTube as his marketing department, acts as his own agent by personally books any gigs he plays around the world, and releases all his material via the medium of his own label Great Depression Records. It’s been well over a year since the last time Jay Brannan and his trusty acoustic guitar took to the Crawdaddy stage – and tonight he receives a hero’s welcome back. Given Brannan’s background, there is a feeling of genuine respect amongst the crowd who have gathered to see him perform tonight – this guy just wants to play music to anyone who’s willing … There’s more
