A select few were invited to a sneak peek of Tron: Legacy this morning, culch.ie were lucky enough to be in this elite group to see 23 minutes of one of this year’s most anticipated films. ‘Electrify the boys and girls if you would be so kind’ - were Michael Sheen’s immortal words in the Tron: Legacy sneak peek, and electrified we were!
Tron: Legacy is the follow up to 1982′s Tron. Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) is still in The Grid, but has managed to make contact with the outside world. Kevin’s son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) follows his father into the world of Tron and comes face to face with his father for the first time in many years.
The sneak peek we saw this morning consisted of seven scenes from the first half of the movie. We got to see how Sam gets into The Grid, his struggle to come to terms with the world he has been plunged into and his first meeting with his father since he was a child.
Back in 1982, Tron did not do well at the box office, although the arcade game based on the movie actually ended up out-grossing it. Tron eventually became a cult classic and thus, the idea of a sequel was born… And from what we have seen, a very good idea this was, indeed.
Tron: Legacy looks and sounds great. The colour and style of Legacy is obviously based on the original Tron, but the depth and detail is amazing. Thankfully the costumes have been updated, while still managing to hold onto the style and feeling of the original. Most of the scenes we saw focussed on the look and sound of the world, and Daft Punk’s soundtrack complimented the style of the movie completely.
We didn’t get to see a lot of the actors, as this sneak peek focussed on the action scenes – light cycle races and gladiator style disc wars – but Garret Hedlund seems fine as Sam Flynn, hopefully there will be some material later in the film for him to sink is acting teeth into. Jeff Bridges looks fantastic, as does Michael Sheen in a very dodgy (but somehow cool) white wig, and the gorgeous Olivia Wile with a short black hairdo.
The 23 minute showing was designed to whet the audience’s appetite for when Tron: Legacy is released in December, and this is exactly what it did. If the final film is anything like this snippet we saw today, we are in for a retro-futuristic treat!
The original Tron is one of my all time favourite movies, I can go back to it and watch it any time and it still never gets old.
Weirdly, I never expected a sequel so when I got wind it was being made I started to get excited, but I’m now starting to get worried if it’s going to be a bit “Blues brothers 2000″ e.g. a cynical cash in on a legendary original and I have to say this preview event has me worried it’s going to be one of those “you saw the best bits in the trailers/previews” and the actual film is going to suck.
I will prolly be the happiest fan in the world to be wrong about that.
I loved the sound of this. I saw the footage in IMAX 3D and you could feel the sound. Awesome!
Can. Not. Wait.
The following line from your post has me concerned
“We didn’t get to see a lot of the actors, as this sneak peek focused on the action scenes ”
This could just be another one of these plot-less, story free, movies that we see so much of these days.

Actually, from every other review online of this 20-minute preview, I’ve read that people felt the exact opposite! Apparently they ended the footage with a great scene which showed Sam meeting his dad for the first time in over 20 years, which was full of emotion with great performances by both actors. I don’t know, maybe brogen just forgot to mention it
