X Blather 2010: Sepp Blatter

Sepp Blatter is the Simon Cowell of FIFA, the world soccer governing body. This week (and last), his organisation has been involved in a bribery and corruption scandal. Similarly, it’s scandalous how Katie Waissel keeps coming back on X Factor from week to week. Now how tentative was that title? Soon, I’m going to run out of things that sound like Blather…Anyway, on to the main event.

Live Review: Warpaint @ Crawdaddy, Thursday 21st October

WARPAINT

Since the release of their 2009 EP Exquisite Corpse, Los Angeles all female four-piece Warpaint have garnered quite a bit of attention – a ‘buzz band’ in every sense of the word. Tonight’s show falls on the eve of the release of the band’s debut album The Fool – which, if advance reviews are to be believed, might just be one of the finest debut offerings of 2010. Crawdaddy as a live music venue can be claustrophobic at the best of times – but tonight’s packed-to-the-rafters sell out affair is certainly not for the faint of heart. The common approach seems to be to find a vantage point and stick to it, and let such luxuries as purchasing a pint or a trip to the bathroom wait until after the show. As the lights dim and the band finally appear on stage, one question prevails – will tonight’s live performance … There’s more

Review - RED

When a group of hit men target retired CIA ‘analyst’ Frank Moses (Bruce Willis), it is up to him to try and find out why. Along the way Frank gathers his crush, Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker) and his retired colleagues Joe (Morgan Freeman), Marvin (John Malkovich) and Victoria (Helen Mirren) to get to the bottom of the mystery. It has been a while since Bruce Willis has been properly on form. This year’s Cop Out was just an example of how a good idea goes bad. Thankfully, RED is a good idea that works out. Willis is loose and funny, his banter with Mary-Louise Parker – the clerk who mails him his pension cheques – is sweet and natural. There is also a fantastic fight scene between Willis and Karl Urban – as CIA agent William Cooper – that is slightly reminiscent of Fight Club and Willis’s glory days as John … There’s more

Sweary’s Jaw

Surreptitiously willing those Glee girls to put their damn pants back on, so you don’t have to. So here’s the deal-ee-oh. I know I’ve been rather quiet recently re: the scandalous faffery of the more recognisable of our world citizens, but it’s only because I’ve really stopped giving a knob. I have other things to be doing, like tweeting about how shit everything is, or growing my fingernails. I’m only writing this because I worry that someone out there might actually care if I don’t. How could I tell if Lindsay Lohan wasn’t kept teetering on the brink instead of plummeting over it by googling Oirish websites for mentions of herself? HOW WOULD I KNOW? (Hello Lindsay, by the way! I’m sure that the nasty rumour about recently-single Christina Aguilera hooking up with Sam Ronson is complete hokey. In the words of the great Cher - from Clueless, that is, … There’s more

Prom Night

This is a weekend full of interesting alternative activities. If you’re as brave as me and have a decent pair of wellies, why not join us for the Culchie Festival in Leitrim. It’ll be great craic. If, however, you prefer life’s finer luxuries and a delightful ball is more your style, then maybe Sunday night’s Gay Prom is for you? Fairy God Mother and one of Ireland’s premiere Drag Queens, Veda, has teamed up with Irish Gay Youth Charity, BeLonG To, to bring you the second ever official Ireland Gay Prom. On Sunday 24th October, 500 members of Ireland’s LGBT Community will converge on the Radisson Blu Hotel, Golden Lane, for a night of high class entertainment, an array of special guest performances, delicious food and dancing until the wee hours. Competition CLOSED: Are You Afraid of the Farm?

***Competition closed. Winners will be notified*** Farmaphobia, -n, an abnormal fear of farms. Real word? No. Real event? Hell yes. The Causey farm in Co Meath are laying on a Halloween spectacular this year in the form of Farmaphobia, an event designed to terrify, and it sounds like they really mean business. There are no children allowed, they advise that there are no refunds for being too scared and a 100-minute visit billed as “one event - countless disturbing experiences” features a haunted house, Prison Camp truck, Bone Valley Graveyard and an eerie maze. Think you’d like to take up the challenge of surviving the almost two hours of terror without peeing your pants or running home to your mammy? Culch.ie have 3 pairs of tickets to attend Farmaphobia that can be used either next Wednesday October 27th or Sunday October 31st, fright night itself. If you’d like to go, just … There’s more

I love Bank Holidays

I love my long weekends - the thought of getting to finish early on a Friday, filling up the weekend with fun stuff, spending Monday recovering and catching up on TV and then only a 4-day week before the next weekend - what could be better? How about kicking off the weekend with a party? Every Good Friday, that’s exactly what I do and it’s become a fun tradition to kick off the spring/summer season. It can take a fair amount of planning and preparation in the weeks beforehand! Seeing as this is another bank holiday weekend, here’s a few ideas from my last few parties: Jello shots - that very US frat house tradition is super easy to make and quickly impresses. Try using up the ends of your alcohol cabinet and pair that with a complementary flavour of jelly. In the past we had strawberry jelly and peach … There’s more

And A Jingly Jangly Darwin Deez To You Too, Paddy!

… aaaaand we’re over the hump of the week. Happy Wednesday afternoon, everyone! This week’s celebratory melody comes from Mr. Darwin Deez, and though he looks like a 70′s PE teacher mating with a hedge, I do hope you’re not alarmed. This is the fantastic Constellations, which is special because it’s getting an Irish release this coming Friday, ahead of Darwin’s November tour dates. He plays the Roisin Dubh in Galway on the 7th, Cyprus Avenue in Cork on the 8th, and The Academy in Dublin on the 9th. Pop goes my pop-o-meter, so it’s nicely primed for the bank holiday weekend. Thank you, Mr. “tap-dancing hipster troubadour” (Christ) Darwin Deez!

Live Review: Jay Brannan @ Crawdaddy, Saturday 16th October

Jay Brannan is a rare breed of musician. The New York native has successfully made a career for himself in music, without any of the common tools of the industry at his disposal. Brannan is entirely independent – he writes his own songs, finances the production of his music himself, uses YouTube as his marketing department, acts as his own agent by personally books any gigs he plays around the world, and releases all his material via the medium of his own label Great Depression Records. It’s been well over a year since the last time Jay Brannan and his trusty acoustic guitar took to the Crawdaddy stage – and tonight he receives a hero’s welcome back. Given Brannan’s background, there is a feeling of genuine respect amongst the crowd who have gathered to see him perform tonight – this guy just wants to play music to anyone who’s willing … There’s more

Be My Love in the Rain - Charity Performances

You could do worse this weekend than treat yourself to the brilliant Be My Love in the Rain. I saw this one woman show earlier this year and really loved it. Written by Paul Kennedy and performed by the terrific Linda Teehan, it is an exciting new Irish play set in contemporary Dublin that explores issues around love, loss and mental illness. Fire & Ice Theatre Company are proud to present two benefit performances of Be My Love in the Rain with all proceeds going to the cancer ward at St. Luke’s. The two performance evenings will take place at 8pm on the 22nd and 23rd of October in the United Arts Club, 3 Upper Fitzwilliam St., Dublin 2. There will be no cover charge but guests will have the option of donating whatever amount they wish to the cause. It’s a girl’s night out Janet and her friends are … There’s more

What do you think of the trailer for Scream 4?

Well, I have no idea what I was expecting, but I was definitely expecting something better than this. Maybe I was being naive, but it’s from Wes Craven!!! I thought he could do it again - revive a stagnating genre. He was the Prince of Horror in the 70s, the King of Horror in the 90s, but if this trailer is anything to go by, the king has gone the way of George III - he’s lost the plot. Update: The Weinsteins have removed the trailer from YouTube, but pop over to the Den of Geek and you can still see it there. Thoughts?

Interview and (oh yea) a FREE album: Bill Coleman

Late last week we ran a competition to give away CDs of Bill Coleman’s excellent new album ‘You Can’t Buy Back Your Life’ with unique, hand made artwork (and congrats to our lucky winners!). But what we omitted to properly plug was the fact that Coleman is giving away the digital download of the album for free on his website. Yes, that’s FREE kids. And it’s an 11 track album. And it’s damn good stuff. Actually if you’re a lazy sort, you don’t even have to go to his website. You can just enter your email address into the handy little widget box thing-a-me-jig below and you’ll get sent a download link instantly. Nice. To make up for our (okay my) incompetence here’s a lovely interview with the man hisself. He’s a nice chap isn’t he? Culch: So, Bill, how is the promotion for the new album going? Has there … There’s more
