Competition CLOSED: Oliver Cole at The Workman’s Club

What are you up to this Saturday night? Nothing? Christ, we can’t have that, which is why Culch.ie would like to send you, and a friend of your choosing - you don’t have to bring Darren this time round - to see the lovely Oliver Cole in the Workman’s Club on Wellington Quay (that’s in Dublin, culchie Culchies!). Onetime Turn frontman Oliver has come up with some lovely Beatlesy/Elliottsy/Kinksy melodies for solo album We Albatri, like What Will You Do?, embedded most handily below. We can’t guarantee either cuddly golden retriever will be at the gig, but sure you’d never know. Just drop us a comment to be in with a chance of nabbing the tickets. Winner will be chosen at random sometime Thursday morning. I’m airy-fairy in my timekeeping.

Culch.ie is going to the Culchie Festival

Firstly, do you have any idea how hard it is for me to write the word Culchie without putting the dot in there? Anyway, that’s my problem, not yours. This weekend is the annual Culchie Festival, now in its 21th year. Yes, I did type 21th. Their website may be full of typos and look like it was designed by a farmer, but that’s irrelevant - it’s going to be a weekend full of craic and mayhem. Taking place in Mohill, Co Leitrim, from October 22nd-24th the first search for Super Gran begins, along with events such as the Culchie Fashion Show and the annual Honda Step-Thru Run. Think Father Ted only non-fiction. Culch.ie will be heading down over the weekend and, though Sinead would like me to try out for the King of the Culchies Competition, I’ll just be spectating. I may also have a drink or two before … There’s more

Culchie Calling Cards - Gigs - October 18 - 24 2010

One Night Only (terrible name for a band if you think of the posters) take their second album on tour stopping off, visiting the Academy 2 in Dublin on Wednesday 20th October. The first single from this album “Say You Don’t Want It” (embedded below) features an actress called “Emma Watson” that you might know from a few movies. By the way, is it just me or does the lead singer look like he’s channelling the Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? No Age perform live at Whelan’s, Dublin on Sunday 10 October with Male Bonding, Silje Nes and Mice Parade. No Age’s album “Everything in Between”, release date Friday 24 September was recorded in Los Angeles from the end of 2009 and into 2010 by the duo of Dean Spunt and Randy Randall. They emerged from former band Wives in 2005, to become No Age, part of the … There’s more

Competition Closed: Soundings

**Competition closed, congratulations to Emer.** If you were in secondary school in the ’80s or ’90s then you probably had a copy of Soundings. It was the go-to poetry anthology for Leaving Cert for over two decades and I’m told it holds many happy memories for many a grown up.(I don’t mean to kick you in the stomach or anything, but I’m too young to know, Leaving Cert ’04 REPRESENT! :p). Luckily, it’s got more than its nostalgia factor going for it. When the good folk at Gill & MacMillan sent us a review copy there was plenty to be delighted by on browsing through the poems as a Soundings first-timer. From Monaghan’s own Patrick Kavanagh (“the bicycles go by in twos and threes, there’s a dance in Billy Brennan’s barn tonight” - Patrick Kavanagh. “Nobody on them, just these feckin’ bicycles!” - Tommy Tiernan) to Eliot, Yeats, Thomas Kinsella … There’s more

Competition CLOSED: RED

***COMPETITON CLOSED. Congratulations to Michael and Oisin, the correct answer was Retired Extremely Dangerous* The trailer for RED did a great bit of attention-grabbing during a cinema trip a few weeks ago. The plot centres around retired CIA agents Frank (Bruce Willis), Joe (Morgan Freeman), Marvin (John Malkovich) and Victoria (Helen Mirren) who used to be the CIA’s top agents and have now become targets. It looks big, noisy and fun and it’s out this Friday (22nd). To celebrate the release the good folks at E1 Entertainment have given us two limited edition comics to give away. RED is based on a DC Comics graphic novel by Warren Ellis and Cully Hammer but what we want to know is – what does RED stand for? For your chance to win the Bruce edition or the Malkovich edition, email the answer to [email protected] by Friday (22nd) at 5pm and we’ll pick … There’s more

Ag Damhsa Sean Nós

Friday just gone, I stayed a little more local and went to the Fingal Folk Clubs Friday session. It’s definitely not Temple Bar… but the lads in Ballyboughal are trying out different guests every week and that makes it even more special and a little unpredictable. I spoke about the Fingal Folk Club before here on Culch.ie. My reason for this post…? Check out Connaught Sean Nós Champion Cathy Scanlon dancing who was the featured guest artist. When was the last time Is this the first time you’ve ever seen it….? Fancy a bit of the real deal diddly eyeeeee ? You know where to come New artists and guests are always welcome. The Fingal Folk Club is €5 entry. Kids and musicians are free. X Blather 2010: Empty Bladder

Heroes Week on X Factor this week. Whose heroes, I don’t know, but that was the theme. Like one of those costume parties with a theme, where there’s thirteen gangsters and then a priest. Sadly, Sunday night’s eviction show saw the pirate leaving the party, and their was also an exit for the only person to totally Adedeji their hair so far this season (yes, it’s now a verb).

Competition Closed: Bill Coleman, New Album, Unique Artwork

Bill Coleman is a Cork musician determined to do things for himself. A prolific writer he’s self-releasing his second album “You Can’t buy Back Your Life” today and we’ve got 3 copies to give away to you lucky Culch readers! Coleman decided to forgo the traditional label route and produce a limited edition run of 2,000 CDs with handmade artwork. The result is that each CD is completely unique. Check out the nifty video below which will give you a taste of Coleman’s musical style and which compresses the artwork creation process into 3-and-a-bit minutes. Bill also talks about the project here. Given this level of focus about his artwork, it’s no surprise to learn he is equally determined to do-it-himself when it comes to the music. Recorded in a home studio, the sound is a mixture of handclappy indie pop and slower, more heartfelt songs. Comparisons with Damien Rice … There’s more

Competition: His & Hers on DVD

Hey campers, how’s about something to brighten up your Friday? That Irish film that’s been getting rave reviews at the cinema all summer is finally being released on DVD. From today you’ll be able to pick up His & Hers in the shops and keep reading, because we’re celebrating the release with a DVD giveaway thanks to the lovely folks at Element Pictures. If you haven’t heard about it (and you must be under quite the boulder if so), here’s a wee glimpse at what it’s all about: “His & Hers is a cinematic mosaic that tells a 90-year-old love story through the collective voice of 70 ladies at different stages in their lives. The hallways, living rooms and kitchens of the Irish midlands become the canvas for the film’s rich tapestry of female characters. The film celebrates the ordinary moments that add up to the extraordinary.” This movie really … There’s more

Easy A

Olive Prenderghast (Emma Stone) is your typical teenage girl. She feels passed over by guys and never was one of the popular kids. In fact, she is completely unseen by her high school peers until she tells a white lie about losing her virginity to a community college student. Next thing you know, Olive is faking having sex with a bullied gay student – to throw the bullies off the scent for a while. One thing leads to another and Olive ends up lying to help a lot of people’s reputations, but when everything is at stake, who is going to tell the truth for her?

As Happy As Larry

Oh! Well, this eases the pain of As Tall As Lions’ passing. This is Hourglass, the new song from former ATAL frontman and rare-pair-a-lungs proprietor, Dan Nigro. Dan now makes music under the name BLOCKS, which chuffs me even more because it reminds me of Tetris (g’wan, click the link and play a level, for old time’s sake). Hourglass is available for $1 (because Dan’s American). That’s a decent price for a decent slice of eletro/indie/rare-pair-a-lungs pop, don’t you think? Highly recommended (again).

Facts Movies have taught us

Been a while since my last venture into Culch Towers, but I thought you might be tickled by this. *** *** *** 1. When they’re alone, foreigners all prefer to speak English to each other. 2. If being chased through a city, you can take cover in a passing St Patrick’s Day parade. At any time of year. 3. All beds have L shaped sheets that reach up to armpit level on the woman, but only waist high on the man lying beside her. 4. The Chief of Police will either suspend his star detective or give him 48 hours to complete the job. 5. All grocery bags contain at least one stick of French bread. 6. Anyone can land a plane provided there is someone to talk them down.
