Culch-dot-ie is off to D-dot-C

… well, not all of us. Specifically, me. I’m off to Washington DC for the next few days, ostensibly to big up Irish blogging and such at the DC Irish Writers Festival, but really because I’ve splattered a lot of Super Mutant heads around Dupont Circle in Fallout 3 and want to see if I can recognise the gaff in real life.

We’re basically going to be chatting about how the notion of Irish writing - all writing - has become gloriously democratised and diverse since everyone followed Craig Doyle’s advice and got some daycent broadband in. If you’ve been following the shortlisting process for the 2011 Irish Blog Awards, you’ll know this. There are some brilliant finds in there and it’s bloody exciting to be part of that. So here we are - living through a time when people can say things like “global village” without getting tried as a witch, and hopping over the pond to talk about blogging with fellow scribes from a different continent altogether. Culch.ie is an international institution now. Isn’t it rad? I think it’s rad (they say rad a lot in the US).

It’s amazing what you can get out of an internet connection and the ever-gnawing fear of The Despot Darren Byrne.

Email me if you’d like a stick of rock brought back.

About Lisa McInerney

That cranky young wan from award-winning blog, Arse End Of Ireland, Lisa’s also noted for her dedication to cobbling together unrelated imprecations to make new and bemusing insults, mostly because she’s not eloquent enough to otherwise explain her deep-seated terror of genre fiction and Fianna Fail. In 2006, The Irish Times called her “… the most talented writer at work in Ireland today”, and her mam still can’t understand why this is better than being the new Marian Keyes. Which it totally is.
