Competition CLOSED: Double Weekend Pass for the Killruddery Film Festival

***Competition Closed - Congrats to Susan***   Culch.ie is teaming up with Killruddery to offer one of you lucky readers the chance to attend the 2011 Killruddery Film Festival, which takes place from Thursday 10th March until Sunday 13th March, 2011 (that’s tomorrow onward folks). The winner will receive two full weekend passes to the festival. Set in the majestic Killruddery House and Gardens in Co. Wicklow, the 2011 festival remains committed to the goal of bringing lost, overlooked and forgotten cinema to Irish audiences. Now in its third year, music will once again be a strong feature of this year’s Killruddery line-up, along with an expanded focus on Irish material, including a close look at the New York based Kalem Film Company, producers of the first fiction films in Ireland.

TV Soundtracks: The West Wing

Maybe it was the release of The Social Network reminding us of Aaron Sorkin’s genius, maybe it was the fact that Martin ‘President Bartlet’ Sheen has been in town for JDIFF, maybe it’s just that it’s been far too long, but we’ve been re-watching our West Wing boxset here at Culch towers and my, my is it providing us with one hell of a good time. Aside from the fact that the entire show is a masterclass in snappy dialogue and the cameramen seem to be forever managing continuous sweeping shots that follow characters walking down corridors and moving from room to room without a break (can you tell we’re in love?) this time around we’ve been noticing that the soundtrack was rather something too. It’s that time of year again. The full Oxegen 2011 line-up has been announced and you’ve got to make up your mind about whether you’re still young enough to enjoy dancing in a field and being covered in more muck than Babe. (A good indicator of youth is whether or not you remember Babe and if you don’t, piss off, we can’t afford to get any more frown lines glaring at you). Coldplay, The Script, Arctic Monkeys, Paulo Nutini, Foo Fighters, The Black Eyed Peas…those are the ones your Ma could name if the music police had her over a barrel (not that we’d be making assertions about anyone having your Ma over a barrel, hot and all as she obviously is, sure didn’t she make you). Jaysus Christ Superstar

Oh hai! Would you like to see the Culch.ie overlord prance around on stage while attempting to sing lines such as “Kiss me, kiss me Jesus”? You would? Then keep reading. Late last year I did the unthinkable - I took up a hobby that has nothing to do with the Internet. I joined Dun Laoghaire Musical Society. After a shaky audition where I sang half of a Jack L song and proved that I could hit some low base notes, they welcomed me in to their bosom. At the end of this month, DMDS will present Jesus Christ Superstar at the Pavilion Theatre, Dun Laoghaire. For those of you who don’t know, JCS is a rock opera/musical about the final week of Jesus’ life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem, and ending with the Crucifixion.
