It’s been another busy week of music news…most especially for those of us who are signed up to more mailing lists than could possibly be healthy.
Fox Jaw Bounty Hunter launch their debut album today. The Limerick four-piece spent five months in studio with Owen Lewis whose credits include working with the likes of REM and Snow Patrol and the result is The Devil in Music, the first single from which is ‘Thread the Needle’. “The single features an arrangement of musical notes to form a chord known as a tritone. In the Middle Ages this grouping of notes was frowned upon and in some cases banned for its demonic and evil sound, and thus was nicknamed ‘Diabolus in Musica’ – Latin for The Devil In Music.” I like the sound, I’m not sure about the vocals. See for yourself:
We really like the sound of RockNess 2011. It’s in Scotland, mind (Loch Ness, obviously), but for an ear-pricking line-up featuring We Are Scientists and The Chemical Brothers it just might be worth the trip. Also featuring Glasvegas, Paulo Nutini and Example it’s happening June 10th - 12th and the ticket price is….not mentioned anywhere on the press release. Hmm. After a bit of rooting around that appears to be because there are a myriad of them. Day tickets start at £59, Weekend tickets start at £135 for a Student and there are also regular person and VIP prices. Don’t ask us how much the flight or the ferry is, we’re not your Ma. Get working it out for yourself over here.
Closer to home, KnockanStockan is a new Independent music festival happening at the beautiful Blessington Lakes in Co Wicklow from July 22nd to 24th (I can vouch for the beautiful bit, rumours as to the fact that I fell from space a fully formed adult and was always this gorgeous are slightly off…I’m actually from around and about those lakes and…I was always this gorgeous). Their line-up so far includes The Hot Sprockets and The Cujo Family with more due to be announced next week and the festival promises “three days of music, festivities, art and fun” for €75. Their launch party is at The Grand Social next Tuesday from 6pm and it’s free and open to the public with food and ents such as jugglers, fire performers and acts from the festival playing. Go ahead and drop in!
Next Tuesday will also see James Vincent McMorrow featuring on the final episode of the current series of Later…with Jools Holland. The show will broadcast live on Tuesday May 24 (10pm, BBC2) before airing in full on Friday May 27 (11.50pm, BBC2). Also on the line-up are Blondie, Beverly Knight and the Friendly Fires.
On Thursday, Dublin band Friend? along with Le Tissier and Sacred Animals make up the line-up for the fifth Future Bright. According to the presser: ‘FUTURE BRIGHT; a collaboration between Pod and Heineken Music, sees some of the most exciting new music in Ireland and around the globe take ownership of the venue and curate their own night on the last Thursday of every month. The artists will be asked to take complete control; to put together a lineup or collaboration with their peers and create a totally unique live experience.’ If it sounds like your bag, tickets are a fiver at it’s in Crawdaddy from 8pm.
Meanwhile, next Friday a very cool thing is happening at Facebook‘s Dublin HQ. Our own BellX1 are playing a live concert on their rooftop which will be broadcast live on the band’s Facebook page at 8pm. The set list will include songs from the recently released Bloodless Coup.
Also in Facebook news, Corona and MTV have teamed up for the Experience The Extraordinary - The Challenge campaign. We’re not, like, entirely sure what you have to do but it’s through a Facebook App ‘users can describe and share the dream experience that they would like to live and Corona and MTV will make it happen’. Might be cool. Ireland was one of only five countries chosen for the campaign, which is nice. Do you think we should also submit videos asking MTV to run a Live Aid concert for us? Here’s a video:
Planet Parade have a new video up from their recent Whelan’s gig. It also includes some rehearsal footage. Worth a look.
The gang behind Sligo’s Temple House Festival have announced details of the days and stage times for their acts. We wrote about the festival here and you can check out the stage breakdown here. Playing the Saturday of the festival are Culch favourites Miracle Bell who are also doing an all ages show at Academy 2 next Sunday May 29th at 3pm. Tickets are €12 from the usual. They’ve also just released the video for the current single, ‘Light Shape Sound’:
Also in line-up updates, there’s been some more noise from the Body&Soul Festival gang since we first wrote about them. Nicolas Jaar, Delorean and Don Letts are now on the bill. Keep an eye on their twittah and the site too, they’ve been having some deadly riddle competitions to win tickets.
See you next week with more musicy stuff and spurious bolding.
