Corkman Colin Aherne has been announced as the winner of the Relentless Energy Drink Extreme Photography competition, which took place last weekend at the Sea Sessions Surf and Music Festival in Bundoran.
Entrants were briefed to capture an image based around any action sport that tells a story of Relentless Energy Drink’s “no half measures” ethos. The competition was judged by world renowned surf photographer and filmmaker, Mickey Smith, director of the multi-award winning surf film Dark Side of the Lens.
“The picture was taken in Helsinki, Finland during a BMX competition.” explains Colin. “I was over there for a few days on a trip and was lucky enough to come across the competition and take some pictures. To me the picture means ‘just go for it’.”
Judge, Mickey Smith says “we were blown away by the high standard of all the entrants, there were some really stunning images. The reason Colin’s stood out though is because it’s dynamic, full of energy and it tells the story of this kid giving everything he’s got to achieve his goals.”
Colin walks away with the €250 prize and tickets to the Relentless Energy Drinik Boardmasters Festival in the UK. He sees his win as another step closer to his ambition of being a full-time photographer. “Winning this competition means a lot to me, it’s very encouraging for a young photographer just starting out. I’ll be smiling about it for some time to come.”
