Opportunity: Do you want to sleep with Sinead O’Connor?

The following post appeared on Sinead O’Connor’s website yesterday, Saturday August 20th and was reported on Independent.ie: The man who runs my site will protectively suggest I may want to visit the bathroom for a few intimate moments and a subsequent cold shower before deciding to post this on the site but I will of course ignore him as it’s too late now and the her-moans are having the best of me. I recently read of a woman in America who married and regularly humps her truck. I don’t yet own a truck but I’m beginning to understand her head space. And am worried I too may be so desperate for sex that within days I might run up the road and hump Bray Cab’s whole fleet in one hour. Forty quid clear-up afterward. Can’t say fairer than that. Except maybe a photo for their web-site. Which would be … There’s more

Events: National Potato Day August 25th

The people at Keogh’s Potatoes (no relation!) are launching the first National Potato Day which will take place this coming Thursday, August 25th. A natural fit for a website called Culch.ie, how could we not cover it? If you like a spud, then The Spud Games in Merrion Square are the thing for you. Featuring potato takes on traditional games - the spud and spoon race for one - as well as activities like making your own Mr or Mrs Potato Head, potato dishes, goodies and competitions it looks like a great day out for all the family. Keogh’s are also encouraging everyone to eat at least one potato on the day or indulge in a potato-based dish - they’ll have special offers in the shops to help you out on that score. National Potato Day - we really REALLY wanted to say “get back to your root vegetables” but it … There’s more

Electric Picnic News: Body & Soul Village

Remember when Body & Soul had their own festival back in June and we raved about it? Well if you didn’t catch them then, the Body&Soul gang are heading back to their home and where it all began: Electric Picnic. Part of the stellar Stradbally line-up of music and delights is the Body&Soul Village which will feature:

Free Events: Bastien & Bastienne @ Farmleigh

Described as the ‘perfect production for people who would like to sample risk free opera’, Mozart’s Bastien & Bastienne is coming to Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park on Saturday September 10th. It’s a story any Irish person ought know - about two young farmers, madly in love until Bastien (the boy) goes to the big city and gets involved with another woman. When he returns Bastienne (the girl) wants nothing to do with him and so ensues the comic attempt to regain her affections. Written when Mozart was just 12, the opera is just 45 minutes long - a taster to see if you’re into it - and is performed as Opera Theatre Company’s Autumn touring production for their 25th anniversary. As it’s free at Farmleigh, the OPW are managing tickets for the event and here’s the link to enter into the lottery: http://www.farmleigh.ie/Events/Title,16393,en.html If you miss out, other (paid) performances … There’s more

Pics: The ESB Electric Ireland Park @ Electric Picnic

A giant hamster wheel, see-saw, swings and more in delightfully grown up sizes will make up the ESB Electric Ireland Park at EP this year. Each one will generate energy for festivalgoers to charge their phones. Pictured above is comedian Karl Spain at the launch of the playgroundtacular news, and as well as Karl there’ll be a bunch of other comedians overseeing proceedings and running challenges throughout the weekend. These include Andrew Stanley, Gearoid Farrelly and Damian Clark. More pictures from the launch after the cut…

You HAVE to hear: Lana Del Rey

Hello. Maybe you know me, maybe you don’t. If we’ve ever conversed face to face or electronically, if I’ve ever bought you a pint or suggested where to have your haircut, in fact, if I’ve ever afforded you a nicety I’m calling in a return. Please, please listen to this song. This is a personal favour to me that you’d be doing. Forget about owing me bus-fare from that time, oh and the first round is on me next time. All because I want to bring this woman into your life. Trust me you’ll thank me later. But who is ‘this woman’? ‘This woman’ has roused me to put finger to keyboard for Culch, which admittedly, I haven’t done for a while. Lana Del Rey, known by day as Lizzy Grant is a singer-songwriter out of NYC. There’s something about her that oozes 1950s, smouldering, screen-starlet and heartbroken lounge singer… … There’s more

Whipping Boy: The Interview

Keep your Joshua Trees, throw your Fitzcarraldo away because as far as you should be concerned, Heartworm by Whipping Boy was arguably one of the greatest Irish albums ever released. Receiving international critical acclaim in 1995, the band continued for another three years and another album before they disbanded in 1998. The good news for fans is that they have reformed and will be playing The Academy on the 17th of September. Culch were lucky enough to catch up with Fearghal McKee and Colm Hassett for a very hoarse chat following a long weekend…   Why reform the band? FM: We’re in the second half of the ninth wave, the good energy of man starts to come out and we as a band think this is the time now. Why did you initially disband the band? FM: We had grown too much, it didn’t work anymore… How do you feel … There’s more

I Heart Tea Crowd - Episode 7 Michelle Doherty

This month on Tea Crowd, Phantom 105.2′s Michelle Doherty takes a break from presenting Finest Worksongs to join us on the sofa and chat dance moves and The Script, take on the Tea Crowd Teaser, and generally be one of our favourite guests ever. If you want to take on the Tea Crowd Teaser yourself and win a hamper of tea goodness from Lyons Tea, the question (and the answer) are in the video. Just leave your answer in the comments and we’ll pick a winner in next month’s episode. Good luck!

Competition CLOSED: Eleventyfour to the floor

EleventyFour does not do four-to-the-floor kind of kicks; I just thought it made a nice little retrotechno title. We love Eleventy at Culch. You may have noticed already. We were utterly thrilled, then, to hear that the kooky cutie is making her Electric Picnic debut this year, playing the Love Letter Stage in the Body & Soul village on Saturday September 3rd. She’s also playing Hard Working Class Heroes in October, but we already told you that last week. Pay attention, for Christ’s sake. Anyway, Eleventy is so thrilled that we’re thrilled that she’s given us two copies of her very lovely debut EP, The Joy Imperative, to give away to a couple of readers willing to be thrilled alongside. Want one? Drop us a comment, telling us something that makes you smile, after the jump!

Review: The Inbetweeners Movie

A seven-strong group of Culchies trouped into Cineworld last night to catch the eagerly, vocally and almost painfully anticipated Inbetweeners Movie. Watching a favourite show move to the big screen is like awaiting the birth of your first born and anxiously hoping it’s not going to be ugly. ‘We’ve already made the buy in, now don’t let us down’ territory. We took our seats and waited for the months of tension to end. Two hours later we had the answers to all of our questions. Did the big screen outing do the boys justice? Did we come away with a sense of closure? Can we even stand to write this while dealing with the developing sense of loss now that it’s over? It’s not easy loving pop culture, it only ever loves you back briefly.

Album Review: Peadar King The Shadowlands

The email for Peadar King’s latest album The Shadowlands came in as per the usual route, except, it was without a press release… Peadar who….? I don’t really mind not getting the blurb, but I’d never [no offence] heard of Peadar…. I’ll admit habits, good or bad, die hard. And like taking a quick leaf through a magazine whilst waiting for Mary [a lady's name chosen at random] to make a decision on whether the feck she really likes those shoes, I did the quick track shuffle through. All the while I’m canning the songs, in a tin, sealed, and there’s my label on it and then I pop them back on the shelf. I am, in short, seeking what is known as, the corker. That song. And you have ten seconds of an intro to drag me into your shop…… One to four goes like so:

LOL For Lamda - 1st September @ The Laughter Lounge

Do you like being merry, laughing with friends and helping out good causes? If the answer is no you’ve probably been too busy trying to con your partner Jacob Marley out of your accountancy firm. If yes, I have just the ticket for you. On Thursday the 1st of September the Laughter Lounge plays host to ‘LOL For Lamda’, a night of comedy featuring Karl Spain, Rory O Hanlon and more still to be announced. Also, as we all know comics love nothing more than a drunk audience shouting at them, there will be a free cocktail between seven and half seven to help get you in the mood, with a late bar and dancing to put the night to bed. The cause is ‘Sponsor My Dream’ which aims to help raise funds for two ridiculously talented Irish actors cover their tuition fees for one of the best drama schools … There’s more

Movie Review: Rise of the Planet of the Apes

It was, of course, Tim Burton who coined the term ‘re-imagined’ when he decided to put his unique stamp on a Planet of the Apes remake in 2001. This was in an attempt to distance his movie sufficiently from the revered original and of course cut the shackles of needing to worry about continuity and as it turned out, a plot that made any sense. ‘Re-imagining’ has has become part of the vernacular when discussing the flurry of re-boots, sequels, prequels and spin-offs now the order of the day for savy production houses. The original Planet of the Apes movie and its four sequels were constructed to create an story that tied together the past and future into one coherent loop. Come 2011 and while the title ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ might suggest an effort to slot into this loop, the movie is in fact a stand-alone … There’s more
