Niamh Marron has been described by many as “filthy”. I was lucky enough to see her recently supporting the wonderful Gearoid Farrelly in Vicar Street. When I heard she was playing in Slattery’s I just had to go along to check her out.
I had never been to Slattery’s before. It was their second night to run the comedy night. As a venue for comedy, it’s a bit of a strange one. Set upstairs in the pub, it all seemed a little busy for me with the bar taking over the room a little too much. With people moving around the room to the bar during the gig, it distracted from the comedians on stage for me.
However having said that I was there to see Niamh Marron who absolutely rocked the room. Niamh is a mixture of pure “dirty stuff” with some proper clean material thrown in to balance it out. A bit like having your cake and eating it!
Niamh rocks the stage
Her observations of daily life are of the side splitting hilarity type. What I really admire about Niamh is her ability to keep her entire audience, even the males among them engaged despite recounting such tales as when she drunkenly decided to “clear the area” the night before having a smear test!
Niamh really works the stage, talks a mile a minute, is very theatrical and the crowd loved her for it. Described as “force to be reckoned with” by the MC Peter O’Byrne, Niamh certainly did not disappoint.
People will either love Niamh or they will hate her. I have to admit I love her. I like that she takes risks on stage and doesn’t conform to the norm. She is definitely not for the faint hearted amongst you, but if you feel like something different and are looking for a fantastic laugh then she is well worth checking out.
Other acts of note from the night for me were Mark Cahill who went to the trouble of having a bicycle and a car made out of cardboard for his act, now that shows dedication to his profession! Peter O’Byrne was also quite funny!
