The BadAss Comedy Café opened its doors last Friday for the first time. I was lucky enough to be invited along to the first night of this new comedy club. It is the run by Aidan Killian and Andrew Gilmore. I wasn’t sure what to expect to be honest; I was unsure whether the setting of a comedy club in a café would work… I have to say it did! Located upstairs in the café, I must say it’s quite a good set up. There was a good crowd in for the opening night, though I expected nothing less with the amount of advertising the lads did prior to it. I was greeted at the door by a lovely woman who even went out of her way to get chairs for myself and my friend to sit on! The lighting in the room was a little strange I have to say though.
The night was MC’d by one half of the brains behind the night, Aidan Killian. Aidan is an excellent comedian and did a superb job at MC’ing. I especially liked his tales of chatting up women, (which apparently he is bad at), which resulted in a plug for comedy clubs being a good date option for couples! Nicely done Aidan! I also loved his Who Am I story which had me in stiches laughing.
First comedian to grace the stage was Paul Tylak. I had never seen Paul before but I’d heard great things. Let me tell you this he didn’t disappoint! He told the audience how he wasn’t subjected to racism in Ireland but rather ‘nicism’! He gets things like “God you must be very cold” said to him! His descriptions of old Mammy sayings that his Mam got wrong were absolutely hilarious. Overall Paul is a hilarious comedian and I must say his ability to change his accents is astonishing.
Next up was Enda Muldoon. Enda began his set by quantifying loneliness by the amount of pint glasses you can fill with your tears! His tales of his 19-year-old American girlfriend were amusing as were his Christmas dinners. His dancing skills however were hilarious. I have to admit for me personally Enda was a bit strange and kind of lost his way during the set. However for all the ladies out there, Enda is putting himself back on the market, he believes he has the complete package… no reasonable offer refused!
The headline act was the immensely funny Gar Murran. I was completely surprised by Gar. Again he is a comedian I had never seen before. Gar for me was just amazing. His observations of the venue were hilarious. His improv’d audience participation was so good from the ‘not friends of 3 years couple’ to the ‘newly dating couple’ the crowd loved him. He also told us tales of doing stand up and being told to do a dance for the aunties when he was a child. I must say I loved Gar’s style of comedy and was very impressed as I had seen him arriving just before his set, which meant that he had no prior knowledge of the audience.
Overall the launch night of BadAss comedy café went very well. The meal deal offer is a very good one too. If I was to have any criticism it would be that the breaks between comedians were a bit long. After each comedian had performed there was a break of between 5-10 minutes, this made the night seem longer and more dragged out. However overall, the night was well organised and went off without a hitch. The atmosphere was quite relaxed which I suppose is helpful when you want people to laugh.
The BadAss comedy café is a weekly event; you can catch the next one tonight at the BadAss Café in Temple Bar. Check out their Facebook page for more details: www.facebook.com/Thebad Asscomedycafe
