On Wednesday night I headed in to Anseo for a laugh as you do at a comedy club. I have to say I really like Anseo as a comedy venue. It has a real intimate and friendly feel to it. As per usual Aidan Killian was on top form as MC for the night, but while I was there I saw two comedians who are definitely ones to watch out for. These were Robert Coyle and Alan Scarry.
I had previously met Robert while reviewing Quinns in Drumcondra but had not seen him perform on stage that night. I was not entirely sure what to expect, but when he bounded on stage with such enthusiasm, I knew instantly that I was going to like him. Robert is a natural storyteller with a bit of a cheeky chappy shyness about him too, which endears him to the audience. From hilarious tales of his first French classes in school to his declaration that advertisers hate women, Robert had the audience eating out of the palm of his hand. It was clear that the room loved him by the rapturous round of applause and various belly laughs through out his set. I loved him too. He is definitely one to watch out for.
On the other end of the spectrum, we have Alan Scarry. If you like your comedy raw and in your face then I recommend going to see Alan. With such topics as Madeline McCann up for discussion, this was no holds barred comedy. This can be hit and miss depending on the audience; in Anseo it went down a storm. Alan has a great stage presence and the sweet innocent look he has about him I imagine gets him out of a lot of trouble with his comedy! Again with the energy in the room and the applause as he was coming off stage told me that the audience loved him.
These two seem to be very different and they are definitely ones to catch at some stage, they gig around Dublin frequently and can be found on Facebook.
