Movie Review: The Green Lantern

Director: Martin Campbell Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Tim Robbins, Geoffrey Rush. Well, during April, kicking off the summer blockbuster season, we had Thor, which was then closely followed by X-Men First Class, gracing the box office a mere two weeks ago. This week sees the release of the “eagerly anticipated” Green Lantern and following that we will have Transformers: The Dark Side of the Moon and Captain America. Let me further point out that this is just the comic book blockbusters and doesn’t include the sequels Cars 2 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part, wait for it, yes you’ve guessed it, 2. So today, I am issuing a plea to the major film companies in the States, please, for the love of good and the preservation of all that is right and good, please stop. The Green Lantern, for all intents and purposes, … There’s more

The Proposal. Here comes the bribe…

With lots of thanks to Movies.ie, I won tickets to the Irish premier of the new romantic comedy, The Proposal. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock, The Proposal follows the story of Margaret (Bullock), a high flying executive for a publishing house in New York city, and Andrew (Reynolds) her over-worked assistant. When it comes to light that Margaret’s visa has run out and that she is about to be deported back to Canada, she is inspired to tell her bosses and consequently the Department of Immigration that she is engaged to Andrew. The movie follows the duo as they visit his family in Alaska for a weekend to tell them about the engagement, the family’s welcoming her with open arms, the warm fuzzy feeling of being accepted into a family, etc. It’s a simple, enjoyable tale of boy meets girl, boy hates girl, girl hates boy, boy and girl … There’s more

Darren’s Movie News 07/05/09

I tell you, if I had the time I would definitely do the Movie News Round Up every day. It builds up so quickly and some days are more hectic than others. Today, we have new movie news, pictures from upcoming shoots, a little gossip and a few trailers. In sad news, Dom DeLuise passed away. A Mel Brooks favourite in Silent Movie, Blazing Saddles and History of the World:Part 1, he died on Monday aged 75. It was reported a few weeks ago that Farrah Fawcett was hospitalised and was in critical condition. More recently, it seems she has been putting her affairs in order. Sad times for her, her husband Ryan O’Neill and their troubled son, Redmond O’Neill. James McAvoy, Elizabeth Banks, Laura Linney and Anna Friel will star in The Details, a black comedy about a couple who discover an infestation of raccoons in their back yard. … There’s more

Wolverine – So What Was All That Fuss About?

A poor cliché ridden storyline with plot holes galore, awful casting in the bit parts (such as Taylor Kitsch as Gambit and Lynn Collins as Kayla), underuse of the strongest cast members (i.e. Liev Schreiber and Ryan Reynolds) and Crystal-Skulls-bad CG in parts made Wolverine a passable, average comic book movie. It wasn’t bad enough to sit alongside Catwoman, but it basically ignored the bar that was raised last year by The Dark Knight, Iron Man and even The Incredible Hulk. It will eventually find a place in my DVD press beside the first three X-Men films, but not until it goes on sale in the three for two offer in HMV.
