Queer Notions: The Big Deal @ Project Arts Centre

the big deal cyan

Following on from recent Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival hit show 565+, and nationwide success of the stunningly moving Victor and Gord, Una McKevitt directs this poignant and gritty work-in-progress showing based on letters and emails between two real life friends undergoing male to female gender reassignment. This is THE BIG DEAL. I’ve always been a woman. All this time I’ve had a penis and to be fair he never did me any harm. In fact he worked very well, but I’ve waited my whole life to have my own vagina. This is my first email to you. I hope it doesn’t in any way shape your thoughts on what you should do. If there is any chance it might, please don’t read it. It is the night before my operation. I am remarkably calm. Shouldn’t I be crying my eyes out or having second thoughts? Shouldn’t I be doing … There’s more

Live Review: Warpaint @ Crawdaddy, Thursday 21st October

WARPAINT

Since the release of their 2009 EP Exquisite Corpse, Los Angeles all female four-piece Warpaint have garnered quite a bit of attention – a ‘buzz band’ in every sense of the word. Tonight’s show falls on the eve of the release of the band’s debut album The Fool – which, if advance reviews are to be believed, might just be one of the finest debut offerings of 2010. Crawdaddy as a live music venue can be claustrophobic at the best of times – but tonight’s packed-to-the-rafters sell out affair is certainly not for the faint of heart. The common approach seems to be to find a vantage point and stick to it, and let such luxuries as purchasing a pint or a trip to the bathroom wait until after the show. As the lights dim and the band finally appear on stage, one question prevails – will tonight’s live performance … There’s more

Live Review: Jay Brannan @ Crawdaddy, Saturday 16th October

Jay Brannan is a rare breed of musician. The New York native has successfully made a career for himself in music, without any of the common tools of the industry at his disposal. Brannan is entirely independent – he writes his own songs, finances the production of his music himself, uses YouTube as his marketing department, acts as his own agent by personally books any gigs he plays around the world, and releases all his material via the medium of his own label Great Depression Records. It’s been well over a year since the last time Jay Brannan and his trusty acoustic guitar took to the Crawdaddy stage – and tonight he receives a hero’s welcome back. Given Brannan’s background, there is a feeling of genuine respect amongst the crowd who have gathered to see him perform tonight – this guy just wants to play music to anyone who’s willing … There’s more

Review: Indiependence Music Festival, Mitchelstown, 31st July & 1st August 2010

There are many important factors to be considered when choosing a summer music festival to attend – everything from the line-up of acts to the camping facilities to the type of crowd the event will attract – and of course, the price of the ticket to get you in. Hitting the European festivals seems to have become a popular summer activity for Irish music fans who want to be kind to their bank balance by combining holiday & festival as one. But also becoming increasingly popular are the small capacity regional festivals which take place around the country throughout the summer. INDIEPENDENCE is one such festival… There’s more

Florence + The Machine @ The Olympia, Monday 3rd May

Florence

When Florence and her mighty machine roll into town they certainly don’t do so quietly. The May bank holiday weekend double-header at the Olympia was preceded by what can only be described as a ticket FRENZY. It is testament to the band’s artistic integrity that they’re taking to the stage in the intimate surrounds of the Olympia – truth be told, they probably could’ve packed out the O2 for a night or two given the chance. With all tickets for the two dates having been sold within mere seconds of going on sale, there was an air of gratefulness amongst the capacity crowd in the Olympia on Monday night – happy to be there, and expecting greatness. Album Review: We Have Band - ‘WHB’

WHBPackshot

Winners of the Emerging Talent Competition at 2009’s Glastonbury Festival, disco-rockers We Have Band have gradually garnered a lot of attention in the run-up to their debut release. The back story alone is enough to intrigue – three ex-employees of EMI, with little experience between them, decide to get together to make an album free of record label influence. Two years (and a lot of buzz) later, the debut offering from We Have Band has landed… There’s more
