Friday 13th: Time To Get Scared

Want Something Scary To Do Tonight? Time To Hit The Cinema As one of the scariest movies to hit cinemas in recent years, if you haven’t heard of Paranormal Activity, you’ve probably been living under a rock. Taking its cue from The Blair Witch Project and other such movies with a first-person viewpoint and handheld camera, Paranormal Activity isn’t quite that simple to describe. The film’s been knocking around since 2007, but has now been edited with new scenes for general cinematic release and was also the surprise film at this year’s Horrorthon in the IFI. It tells the story of Micah and Katie (Micah Sloat and Kate Featherston) and their attempts to record the strange…well, paranormal activity in their house. Strictly speaking, Paranormal Activity doesn’t open for another two weeks, but there are special preview screenings on tonight: Friday 13th hasn’t been this scary since that time we were … There’s more

Lady Gaga - Bad Romance Video

She’s got two dates confirmed in The O2 (though some of us will always call it The Point) next year, but Lady Gaga is still releasing new material, with a re-release of The Fame (called The Fame Monster and featuring all new tracks) out next week. No, I don’t know why I like her, but new song Bad Romance is stuck in my head and I’ve already watched the video about three times. I’m tempted to even say she’s officially beat Madonna at her own game…there, I said it out loud, now stop judging me.

Twilight Spoof #5764

There’s been some pretty hilarious content turned out by the Saturday Night Live gang over in the States: not only did we have Tina Fey starring as Sarah Palin, but without SNL, we also wouldn’t have The Lonely Island giving us “Jizz In My Pants” or “I’m On A Boat” or even 30 Rock. This week, guest host Taylor Swift shot the trailer below, a hilarious spoof on the Twilight franchise, all about choking people…by accident. Check it out soon before the American overlords decide it’s unfit for viewing this side of the Atlantic. I’m not going to include any 30 Rock videos, because you should already be watching it, but just in case you’ve never seen any of The Lonely Island’s videos… (and viewer discretion is advised…)

I Don’t Think He Can Handle It (woo)

How could I let the morning go by without sharing Kanye West’s outburst at the VMAs last night…no, really. The rapper hopped to the stage to share his thoughts after Taylor Swift pipped Beyoncé to the post with the Best Female Video award, something he was not too happy with at all. Now, the question remains as to whether they’ll show the full footage when the awards show airs this evening at 9pm on MTV.

Guest Post: DVD Killed The TV Star

Some of you guys had really interesting things to say about my last post, and Darren’s comment, along with Amanda’s recent post on upcoming new shows, got me thinking about following it up, but this time taking a look at TV shows, and the effects that the digital age and the internet have had on some of our favourite TV shows. You might think “not a lot,” but you might also be in for a surprise. Serial media is something of a scary phrase, but we’re all familiar with the concept behind it: whether it’s TV shows, comics or even book or movie series, we’re all used to the concept of a story that expects us to come back for more, usually with some cliffhanger leaving us desperate for resolution. It stretches back over two hundred years, when Charles Dickens’ novels were serialised: it’s the same with George Eliot, Oscar Wilde, … There’s more

Guest post: Is It Really Better Late Than Never?

This is a guest post for Culch.ie from Ken of BurnAllZombies.com. Ken is looking at how illegal downloading effects the entertainment industry. Check it out and leave your comments below. - Darren With the internet more rife with pirates than a Johnny Depp movie, we all know illegal downloading exists, and Irish ISPs and their reactions to sites like The Pirate Bay have been hitting the headlines over the last few weeks. The music industry in particular are doing their best to clamp down on piracy and illegal downloads, but let’s be realistic: internet piracy will probably never be completely eliminated, at least not until the ultimate cause gets nipped in the bud. So is piracy the result of consumer greed, or in some ways, have the entertainment industry been too slow to move into the digital age and created a situation of their own delayed action? While we can … There’s more
