About Niall

The proverbial man lost in La Mancha. Sports aficionado and all-round scoundrel. Über-geek to boot. I run the movie website Scannain.com and can usually be found twittering away as @niallxmurphy.

The Crazies - Review

There seems to be an epidemic in Hollywood these days with studios intent on wheeling out old properties and remaking them. Nowhere is this more evident than in the horror movie scene, with a spate of remakes ranging from downright rotten to devilishly good having been recently foisted upon us. The latest in this long line is The Crazies, a remake of one of the Grandmaster of horror George A Romero’s lesser known works.

Couch Potato - DVDs Out This Week

Couch Potato this week comes to you a day later than usual. The Oscar nominations yesterday knocked me back a bit so I do apologise. We have an interesting if unexceptional line-up this week, but there should be a little something in the sack to suit everyone’s tastes.

You need to see…Pigeon Impossible

Pigeon Impossible is a short animated film from director Lucas Martell, who wrote, directed and produced, a labour of love that took almost 5 years to complete. What this has resulted in a remarkable little film, as funny as it is visually adept this shows a new filmmaker with a remarkable flair for the medium. Basically the plot revolves around the potential global devastation that pigeons potentially could cause if they ever mobilise and become serious about getting our bread crumbs. So check out the video below and the official website here.

Couch Potato - DVDs out this week

Tuesday is ordinarily the most depressing day of the week. With that in mind I’ve brought a little something to little up the dour mood, a collection of new DVDs that will keep you entertained right up till the weekend. So forget your boss, your husband/wife/kids, and snuggle up tight with a good glass of vino and a nice new movie. You know you deserve it.

The Friday Feeling - Movies out this week

Ah Friday how I love you so, you beautiful day that signifies the beginning of the weekend and ushers us gently into the welcome embrace of new cinematic material… Right that’s enough of that. This week sees the release of 2 very big movies, one of which must certainly knock Avatar of it’s perch atop the Irish box-office at long last.

The Friday Feeling – Movies Out This Week

It’s Friday once again and should any of you be brave enough to venture outside the front door in this weather you will find a host of new movies in your local cinemas. The warm, comfortable surroundings and on-screen entertainment are the perfect elixir for the winter blues.

The Movie Year in Preview – February

Part 2 of the 12 month preview of the movies to look out for in 2010 brings us to February. Traditionally a month short on days but high on quality as many of the awards season favourites make their way trans-Atlantic. With the Oscar nominations opening the month expect a lot of hype over certain movies and some older ones return for limited runs.

The Movie Year in Preview - January

In the first of a 12 part series I take a look at what you can expect to see in Irish cinemas in the year ahead. 2010 promises to be another bumper year on the cinematic front, as new technologies and old favourites make their way on to the silver screen. I have tried to get the release dates as accurate as possible but some may move in the coming months. Popcorn at the ready, here we go…

Phone Wars: Google’s Nexus One

In a somewhat odd but not entirely unexpected move internet search giant Google has unveiled their very own smart phone. Titled the Google Nexus One it is set to compete firmly with Apple’s all-conquering iPhone. The Nexus runs on Google’s own open-source Android software, the operating system of choice for a number of current big-name phone manufacturers such as Motorola and Sony Ericsson. While the use of Android will provide Google with a large number of downloadable and customisable applications straight out of the box it is still in its relative infancy compared with the goliath that is the iTunes App Store. The Android platform offers the Nexus some other cool but not unique features such as animated/interactive wallpaper and a wrap-around 3D cube feel to the edges, but it’s not quite ready to compete with Apple’s or Palm’s more polished fare just yet. Key features on the new phone … There’s more

Christmas Countdown: Top 25 Movies of 2009 – No.1

And so the end is here and I unveil my final movie. Imagine that sentence with Sinatra singing and you’ll get what I was aiming at. 25 days of counting down the top movies of 2009 has led us somewhat circuitously to this day. Only one remains, the final one, the best movie of 2009. Many favourites have fallen by the way side and if any of you have been trying to guess what it could be, waiting with baited breath well then the good news is the wait is over. The best movie of 2009 is…

Christmas Countdown: Top 25 Movies of 2009 – No.2

Okay technically today’s choice is a 2008 movie but for the sake of clarity it meets the criteria having being released in January 2009 in Ireland. A great heart-warming master-class in cinema it deservedly walked away with many of the top honours in last years awards season. The second best movie of 2009 is…

Christmas Countdown: Top 25 Movies of 2009 – No.3

I’m a sci-fi nut, love it to bits, and yet in my list of top films ever sci-fi fares poorly. Whether I’m just too picky or whether there are genuinely few epic sci-fi movies I don’t know. What I do know is that 2009 was a great year for sci-fi and today’s choice reflects just that. Worthy of mention with the likes of Silent Running, Blade Runner, Solaris and 2001: A Space Odyssey today’s choice reflects the ability of movies to make you think and wonder about ideas bigger than yourself. The third best movie released in Ireland in 2009 is…

Christmas Countdown: Top 25 Movies of 2009 – No.4

It pains me greatly to put today’s choice at four instead of one. As soon as I saw it I felt about 10 again and realised why I love cinema so much. It brought me back to when I saw Jurassic Park, Star wars, and Raiders of the Lost Ark for the first time and evoked childhood memories the likes of which few movies can. For almost 2 hours I sat enthralled, moth agape and starred in wonder at the majesty that unfolded onscreen. It was only in hindsight that I looked at this movie critically and saw it’s flaws, but then I went back and saw it again, and again, and again, and each time I forgot the flaws and loved that I had chosen to spend my time watching this particular movie. Logic tells me it shouldn’t be one and like for one of the protagonists logic almost … There’s more

Christmas Countdown: Top 25 Movies of 2009 – No.5

And so we reach the Top 5, and in all honesty any of these would be worthy of the top spot as there is next to nothing to choose between them. I relegated today’s choice to the bottom of the Top 5 simply because I feel more strongly about the others. That is not to say that I believe that this is worse than the others, it isn’t, it’s just that the high I got from this one went away quicker than for the other 4. The 5th best film of 2009 is…
