We’re fans of the Electric Picnic here on culch and this year’s lineup looks excellent with bands like The Cure, Orbital, Elbow and Hot Chip rocking Stradbally from the 31st August to the 2nd of September (full lineup here - PDF). I have been a huge fan of Wainwright since I first heard his version of Hallelujah for the Shrek soundtrack. We’re huge fans of the 80s supergroup Spring Break at Culch.ie. Playing the biggest American 80s hits even better than the originals, every single time we’ve been to see them has been an amazing night. Yes, that is me getting into the action (thanks to @cloudsteph for the awesome hair). That’s one of the most fun things about a Spring Break gig. Everyone embraces the cheese and leaves their irony and cynicism at home. Dressed up with big hair, colourful clothes, state trooper sunglasses and as more hair product than John Travolta’s career has ever seen, the loyal crowd loves this band. And then there’s the music. Just Blaze has cut his gnashers producing hits for such luminaries as Jay-Z and Eminem, as well as having worked with Busta Rhymes, DMX, Snoop Dogg… yeah, basically everyone who’s anyone and back again. Everyone knows that the best convention ever was the one at the end of Galaxy Quest, but as that was kind of a one-off, and also entirely fictional, your best bet for geeky frolics and detailed debates about protocol for computer systems that haven’t been invented yet is to get yourself along to Invasion Dublin. Yup, Ireland’s Star Wars convention returns to Citywest from the 4th to the 6th of May. May the FOURTH be with you, in fact. Ha. Ha-ha. Invasion Dublin promises to be stuffed to Jar-Jar’s gills of the entertaining, the educational, the bizarre and the nostalgic. This year there’s a pleasing and very healthy emphasis on the science in science fiction, with talks and demonstrations on space travel and robotics. Last year, Team Culch got together with Randomers From the Internet to take a slot at the Simon Community’s Sing for Simon 24 hour carolathon and it went so well that we’re doing it again this year. Taking place from 5pm on Friday December 16th until 5pm on Saturday December 17th, the carolathon raises money for Dublin Simon Community and just like last year we’ve taken the 1am - 3am slot. WE WANT YOU TO SING WITH US! The Simon Community are raising money to provide services for homeless people and the more voices we can add to the Culch.ie choir, the more impact we’ll have and the more vital cash we can entice out of passers-by with our good looks and awesome tunes. Looking for something to do this New Year’s in Dublin? How about the New Year’s Eve Countdown Concert in College Green? Paul Brady, Bressie and Damien Dempsey are just some of Ireland’s most-loved musicians scheduled to perform live at the gig featuring pyrotechnics and special effects. That’s not all though. The concert is part of a larger three day festival taking place from December 30th 2011 – 1st January 2012 entitled NYE Dublin. It has been created to animate Dublin city centre, engage residents and attract visitors to the capital over the three day period. During the festival, seasonal markets will be located in central locations across Dublin, including Wolfe Tone Square, Temple Bar and Barnardo Square. Children’s entertainment will be provided in various “kids’ fun zones” including an ice rink in Wolfe Tone Square.
