Blog Awards 2011

We’re delighted to be nominated in the Pop Culture category in the Irish Blog Awards 2011. If you haven’t heard about the awards you can check out the other nominees and other categories here. The big event is happening in the Europa Hotel, Belfast on March 19th and we’re looking forward seeing everyone there. We were absolutely stunned and delighted to win the category last year so thanks a million for giving us a chance to defend our Pop Culture crown. We made a little video in the wee hours to show our appreciation…

Competition Closed: A Christmas Pressie from the Carphone Warehouse

**Competition Closed. Congratulations to Niall** Ho ho ho….Merry Christmas! That’s right folks…it’s nearly time (as if you didn’t know). We hope you’re getting through the shopping, enjoying the socialising and planning a relaxing and happy December 25th. But wait, you say, there’s more! The folk at the Carphone Warehouse invited us along to the launch of their new Carphone Warehouse Connected World in Dundrum Town Centre a few weeks back. It’s full of tablets (the techie kind), ‘droid phones what nerds love and loads of other cool gadgets, in fact it’s a rather snazzy place altogether. We recommend dropping in to check the place out, the amount of tech on display gave us a serious case of the wantsies. They even have Ireland’s first Geek Squad: 3 guys who’ll provide tech support from simple stuff to setting up your phone for you if you’re not that way inclined to the … There’s more

Competition CLOSED: Are You Afraid of the Farm?

***Competition closed. Winners will be notified*** Farmaphobia, -n, an abnormal fear of farms. Real word? No. Real event? Hell yes. The Causey farm in Co Meath are laying on a Halloween spectacular this year in the form of Farmaphobia, an event designed to terrify, and it sounds like they really mean business. There are no children allowed, they advise that there are no refunds for being too scared and a 100-minute visit billed as “one event - countless disturbing experiences” features a haunted house, Prison Camp truck, Bone Valley Graveyard and an eerie maze. Think you’d like to take up the challenge of surviving the almost two hours of terror without peeing your pants or running home to your mammy? Culch.ie have 3 pairs of tickets to attend Farmaphobia that can be used either next Wednesday October 27th or Sunday October 31st, fright night itself. If you’d like to go, just … There’s more

Competition Closed: Soundings

**Competition closed, congratulations to Emer.** If you were in secondary school in the ’80s or ’90s then you probably had a copy of Soundings. It was the go-to poetry anthology for Leaving Cert for over two decades and I’m told it holds many happy memories for many a grown up.(I don’t mean to kick you in the stomach or anything, but I’m too young to know, Leaving Cert ’04 REPRESENT! :p). Luckily, it’s got more than its nostalgia factor going for it. When the good folk at Gill & MacMillan sent us a review copy there was plenty to be delighted by on browsing through the poems as a Soundings first-timer. From Monaghan’s own Patrick Kavanagh (“the bicycles go by in twos and threes, there’s a dance in Billy Brennan’s barn tonight” - Patrick Kavanagh. “Nobody on them, just these feckin’ bicycles!” - Tommy Tiernan) to Eliot, Yeats, Thomas Kinsella … There’s more

Nostalgia Week: Boys of the Nineties

As a fully qualified kid of the Nineties, I have to say I’m loving the revival that’s going on at the minute. 80s nights are gradually being supplanted by 90s nights flush with high top runners, brightly patterened shirts and Boom Shake Shake Shake The Room. So naturally I’m delighted that Culch.ie have decided to go all retro on our asses with Nostalgia Week. Now to the topic at hand. I’ve decided to focus on some of the boys of the 90s. At least, the boys that I found myself blu tacking to my bedroom walls as I entered the adolescent minefield of crushes. Saved By The Bell was a show that gave us comedy, questionable fashion, “serious issues” episodes where they’d crowbar in a moral message about smoking, alcohol or drugs, but most importantly to my eleven year old self, it gave us Zack Morris and AC Slater. Dreamboat … There’s more

Competition Closed: Nostalgia Week Day 3 : The Den Saves Christmas

The occurrence of nostalgia can a lot of the time be pinned down to one exact moment. It’s that magical time during a night out with your friends and a couple of bar stools. It’s at the point which is post the slightly sober conversations of if Mizzoni’s is simply the best pizza in Dublin or actually an addictive cocaine topped slab from God himself. While it’s pre the part of the night where you have fallen out with your best mate and are drunkenly obsessing about some stranger with a degree in politics simply because ‘The Frontline’ with Pat Kenny happened to be on in the back ground when your Ex stamped all over your heart, the adorable little thing. Yes, the trip down Nostalgia road should happen somewhere in between the two and is clearly marked with a ‘Sure you know what I miss?’ line from one of … There’s more

Competition: Ross Noble, Rich Hall and Kevin Bridges at the Olympia

The comedy line-up around these parts has been somewhat stellar this year. Dara O’Briain’s had an epically long Vicar Street run, Eddie Izzard played a blinder in the O2 not 12 months ago, Flight of the Conchords sold out two nights at the Olympia and could have sold out a good many more and along with all of that the usual calendar staples of the Kilkenny Cat Laughs and the Comedy Carnival in the Iveagh Gardens had impressive line-ups to boot. The good news is, the comedy season isn’t over and the even better news is that Culch.ie, with thanks to our simply awesome friends at MCD, would like to send you along to not one and not two but three comedy shows at Dublin’s Olympia this October and November. To kick off the 3-night stand, we’ll send you to see Kevin Bridges on Saturday October 2nd. Kevin’s been knocking … There’s more

See The Stars At New Vegas! (well, hear them anyway)

Vegas. To celebs it’s like a great sparkling jar of sugar-water with a funnel in. Sure Celine Dion hasn’t left in years. And it looks like New Vegas is just as enticing, if Bethesda Softworks‘ announcement of the cast for the latest epic episode in the Fallout saga is any indication. Which it is. Because what other New Vegas would I be talking about? Fallout: New Vegas is, of course, the next release in this series of bloody brilliant and much-loved RPGs, and it’s coming our way on October 22nd. Set in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by mutants, weirdos, mutant weirdos and giant nasty things of the insect persuasion, you play a courier who’s been robbed and left for dead and is probably a bit cranky about it. You’ll be in good company, though. Matthew Perry, Kris Kristofferson, Danny Trejo (who will reportedly lend his growls to a playable companion … There’s more

What’s Going On Your Summer Soundtrack?

Doubtless it’ll be pissing rain by the time you lot read this, but this post came to me when it was sunny and the wind was coming on little teasing tufts of Gawd’s benevolent breath, or something. I was walking along Suburbia Street, considering playlists (I’m due to draft one up for a friend who’s so indie, he listens to bands whose frontmen haven’t been conceived yet, and so on and so forth, as the cliche goes), enjoying the weather, and thinking about summer. It’s on the way, you know. You can tell because the indie brats have stopped wearing socks outside their tights. And so, with playlists and dandelion wishes in the air, I thought you might like to get in the mood by nominating some nice, summertime songs for me? I can start you off, because there’s a couple of lovelies in the pipeline/my ear canals that you … There’s more

What a way to start the day!

It wouldn’t matter what side of the bed you got out of if this is how you descended from your bedroom every day. There should be government grants to have these installed. Start the day in the good mood, productivity increases, hell we’d slide our way of recession. Or be late for work and get fired when you tell the boss you were playing on the stairs. Via Epic Win FTW.

Yikes, I want a Yike!

How cool are these? A foldable, baggable, super cool electric bike. These Yike Bikes have been listed at Number 15 in the Times ‘The 50 Best Inventions of 2009′ list. I found them thanks to Laughykate’s blog. She was lucky enough to have a spin on one - thanks Kate! The bad news is that they are expected to retail at between €3500 and €3900. You can read the full spec here. Oh Santa - all I want for Christmas…

Jimmy Choos at H&M

You may or may not have read before that H&M have commissioned Jimmy Choo to create a more affordable range of accessories for their stores. The exciting news is that the range for the stores has been revealed and that they will be in stores from November 14 - including H&M in Dundrum Shopping Centre and on South King Street, both in Dublin. Although the range will include shoes, bags and clothes for both men and women, I think it’s fairly safe to assume that the footwear for the ladies will sell like hot cakes! Especially when the price range is €79-€149 compared to the usual €400+ I’d definitely be buying me a pair of these babies - they look stunning in blue too! Switswoo!!
