5 Christmas Covers We’d Like To See…

ChristmasMusic

It’s that time of year again, the same old – mostly dire – collection of Christmas songs being played to death on the radio. What we really need is some reworking of these tired old tunes by some of those who made headlines in 2012… 1. Crystal Harris – All I Want For Christmas Is Hugh (Original by Mariah Carey) Or to give it its full title “All I Want For Christmas Is Hugh…Hefner’s Fortune”. It’s easy to make fun of the 86 year old’s planned marriage to someone 60 (SIXTY) years his junior….which is probably why so many media outlets have done just that. The old “So Debbie Magee, what first attracted you to millionaire Paul Daniels?” chestnut certainly springs to mind. Each new fiancée must feel like a slot on a roulette wheel, hoping Hef pops his clogs just after they tie the knot. All that being said, … There’s more

Alternative Miss Ireland 2011

Shortly after Culch.ie narrowly beat Panti’s Blog Job to the post as ‘Beat Pop Culture Blog’ at last year’s Blog Awards we received a congratulatory message from the lady herself, advising us, in what we hope was a light-hearted manner, to watch out for horse heads on our pillows! So it’s with what we feel is pure self-preservation inspired necessity that we inform you of the upcoming Alternative Miss Ireland 2011. Taking place amongst the decrepit grandeur (her words, not mine) of the Olympia Theatre on Sunday March 13th, this annual extravaganza is one not to be missed. Currently looking for contestants for next year, the competition is open to one and all, with no restrictions (there was a dog one year!). For details see after the jump.

On Sunday the 14th of February 2010, the doors of the Savoy Theatre in Cork open at 8pm and present an evening of alternative comedy and a fantastic variety of contestants for the whole of Cork to behold in the shape of the Alternative Miss Cork pageant. The winner of the pageant will represent Cork at the annual Alternative Miss Ireland in Dublin’s Olympia Theatre in March. The events are a fun means of raising funds for charities who help the many HIV positive people in Ireland. If you have not been to an Alternative Miss Cork Show, I’ll explain. It will be hosted by the one and only Panti, also known … There’s more

A new world order?

Watching the coverage of Glastonbury on the box recently it seemed that anything cool, edgy and fresh was fronted by a vibrant woman. Indeed most of the albums I’ve downloaded recently are acts led by women. La Roux, Florence and the Machine, Bat For Lashes, Lykke Li, The Gossip, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The list goes on. Even the Irish music scene is embracing energetic, female fronted acts. Dirty Epics, Fight Like Apes, Ham Sandwich etc etc. It certainly looks like we are immersed in a new musical order. So are we witnessing a shift in power and influence from the previously male dominated world of rock and alternative music?
