Spirit of Folk 2012 - Call for band submissions

If you’re a regular reader of Culch then you’ll know what an amazing time myself (Anto), Peter Donegan and Brian Greene had at Spirit of Folk 2011 (Day 1, Day 2 & Day 3 posts). It was a brilliant weekend from start to finish and brought together some amazing acts and people. 2012 is set to be bigger and the guys have just put out a call for band submissions. As they say themselves: We’re looking for folk music in the broadest sense. We’re looking for American folk, Irish Trad., bluegrass, folk rock, country and anything that fits our festival. Last year we had bands as broad ranging as St. John the Gambler’s eastern influenced, stomping Alt. Folk to Lisa O’Neill’s tender folk ballads. There’s no reason why this year’s line up can’t be just as diverse. Folk in its most basic sense is the music of the people so … There’s more

Hard Working Class Heroes 2010

Hard Working Class Heroes (or HWCH) is a festival held in Dublin each year to expose and promote homegrown talent in the form of Irish bands and musicians. HWCH 2010 takes place from the 7th - 9th of October across Dublin and will see over 100 bands perform in 7 venues including The Button Factory, Pravda, Andrew’s Lane Theatre, Sweeney’s, The Mercantile, The Workman’s Club and the Twisted Pepper itself. Last night we were treated to four of those said bands at the Twisted Pepper on Middle Abbey St for the HWCH 2010 Launch party. Live music on the night was provided by Enemies, At Last an Atlas, Noveau noise and Squarehead who finely showcased the type of fresh Irish musical talent we should expect across the program of the festival. Bottles of Bulmers Berry and bags of Burdocks chips were in plentiful supply on the night to the assembled … There’s more

Doctor Leaves

I’ll freely admit that I’m cynical when it comes to certain aspects of the Irish music scene but I’ve been singing the praises of a new release from an Irish band. The eponymous debut EP from Doctor Leaves was released on September 9th and has been on constant rotation since i got my hands on it. Doctor Leaves is the musical moniker of 2 musicians better know to their family and friends as Ben Shorten and Dara Munnis. Both Ben and Dara play piano and guitar; Dara also plays the traditional flute and Ben plays the cello. They formed their first band together when they were in their mid-teens and eventually went their separate ways musically, but remained friends. During this time Dara played with other musicians such as the Coronas, Gavin Glass & the Holy Shakers and Jack L. Ben experimented with new bands. Eventually the pair reunited musically … There’s more

demands for 21 demands …?

In 2007 RTE, which hasn’t really got a great reputation for making the greatest of programmes…. possibly had a chance to prove its worth. A young band called 21 demands made it down to the last 2 of the reality tv show ‘your a star’ finals. But did the better half win? No. Of course it went to some chap who was more a karaoke king. No offense; but the lads really were/ are a great band. They are still on the go, local sources tell me…but they haven’t *made it* so to speak.
