Generally in life, the things that we least understand are the things that intrigue us the most - some of us anyway. David Lynch’s films, Lee Evans’ popularity, Paul Galvin’s dress-sense. I came upon Bat For Lashes – aka Natasha Khan - after the release of her second album, Two Suns. Lead single Daniel received some airplay on Irish commercial radio, providing some welcome respite from hearing Sex On Fire fifty times a day. So, having never been one to ‘wait til I hear the next single’ before deciding to buy an album – a policy which has seen me amass quite a number of duds over the years (The Hives, I’m looking at you) – I rushed out and bought Two Suns, along with its fellow Mercury-nominated predecessor, Fur And Gold. A new world order?

Watching the coverage of Glastonbury on the box recently it seemed that anything cool, edgy and fresh was fronted by a vibrant woman. Indeed most of the albums I’ve downloaded recently are acts led by women. La Roux, Florence and the Machine, Bat For Lashes, Lykke Li, The Gossip, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The list goes on. Even the Irish music scene is embracing energetic, female fronted acts. Dirty Epics, Fight Like Apes, Ham Sandwich etc etc. It certainly looks like we are immersed in a new musical order. So are we witnessing a shift in power and influence from the previously male dominated world of rock and alternative music?

The genius Julie Feeney is a composer, singer, record producer, musician, songwriter, theatre artist and educator. Her self-produced debut album, 13 songs, won her the Choice Music Prize in 2006 ahead of Duke Special’s Adventures in Gramaphone and Bell X1′s Flock. From Galway, the stunning singer has just released her second album, pages. Bat for Lashes is the pseudonym of English musician Natasha Khan. She graduated in music and visual arts and while at university she dabbled in multi-media work - sound installations, animations and performance. She released her second album in April, “a record of modern-day fables exploring dualities on a number of levels - two lovers, two planets, two sides of a personality“.
