Smithwick’s new Pale Ale

Culch marked Smithwick’s 300 year anniversary with a tour of the plant in Kilkenny late last year and there’s more news with the launch of a new beer, Smithwick’s Pale Ale. Launched this week, Pale Ale is craft brewed in individual batches using: aromatic Amarillo hops, 100% pale ale malt and the prized Smithwick’s yeast. It’s been nine months in development, is golden in colour and has a distinct full flavour. We went along to Doheny & Nesbitt’s to chat to Billy Power, Smithwick’s Global Governance Director, who explained how Smithwick’s is well up in on and off license sales in the last 18 months. He said now is the right time for such a craft launch and it will be available in 350 outlets over the next couple of weeks (list of pubs here). I enjoyed the few taster pints we had with the distinction that the flavour was … There’s more

300 Years of Smithwick’s

The following is a guest post by Christian Hughes. Christian is a social media advocate and enthusiast and runs the popular digital marketing blog, Digitology. He can also be found on Twitter: @christianhughes Culch has written about Guinness of late with Arthur’s Day just gone but what many people don’t realise is that Guinness isn’t Ireland’s oldest pint, and St. James’s Gate isn’t Ireland’s oldest brewery! 2010 marks the 300 year birthday for the Smithwick’s St. Francis Abbey Brewery in Kilkenny. To celebrate the milestone, the brewery has thrown open it’s doors and is inviting the public to tour the brewery. Always striving to keep you guys informed and not needing a second invite to view a brewery, Anthony and I were delighted to recently attend a private tour to get the full story.

Paulaner Oktoberfest Dublin

The Paulaner Oktoberfest Dublin is in its second year now at Georges Dock in the IFSC. Darren has already had a competition to win tickets to dinner at the opening night here (hurry it closes today!). Last year over 70,000 people attended and if the huge increase in attendees to SeptemberFest this year is anything to go by, it’s going to be huge! Running from Thursday 8 to Sunday 18 October, the Oktoberfest will celebrate all things Bavarian but especially the beer. A Bavarian band, Mostland Stürmer will entertain every lunch time from 12 to 2pm and in the evenings from 6pm. As you listen to the band you can wander around the various stalls selling delicious Paulaner Weiss Bier, Wurst (German sausage), Sauerkraut (pickled cabbage), Bretzels, pastries, and a host of other Bavarian favourites such as smoked ham, potato pancakes, cheese, mushrooms and dumplings. Mmmm. It takes me back … There’s more

Anyone fancy a pint?

Living away from Ireland I miss certain things, none more so than my local pub. Reminsicing over the good times that I’ve spent hanging with my friends I started to wonder what if I could drink in any pub/bar , where would that be? When my daydreaming led, as it inevitably always does, to fictional pubs I realised that most of the best pubs that I’ve ever paid witness to have been on TV. So I decided to catalogue the Top 5 TV pubs. My first and only rule was that the establishment in question must serve alcohol, so goodbye Central Perk (Friends) Café Nervosa (Frasier), Java The Hut (Veronica Mars) and Café Diem (Eureka). After that all bets are off…

SeptemberFest in the Phoenix Park

Last September, when the weather was sunny and the days were long, we took a long walk to SeptemberFest 2008 in Farmleigh in the Phoenix Park. There we were greeted with a large beer tent, lots of food stalls and some outdoor musical entertainment. SeptemberFest is on again this year on 12 and 13 September, 11.30am to 6.30pm in Farmleigh in the Phoenix Park. The festival, although mainly for beer and other alcoholic beverages, is also a food event with a range of food stalls selling their tasty wares as well as the regular Farmleigh food market around the grounds of the house. There is free entertainment both days as well, catering to kids and adults alike. In fact last year there were several very young kids getting on down to some of the trad music being played by one of the acts A host of independent Irish micro breweries … There’s more
