Culchie Calling Cards - Gigs - November 29 - December 05 2010

This late gig guide is brought to you by the letters S and W and the repeated phrase, “No”. GIGS Ellie Goulding plays Tripod, Dublin on Tuesday November 30th. Ellie Goulding is something of a darling in the music press. She meets the wonderful people, and remixes of her songs are a delight. The thing, for me at least is, her collaborations sound better than the source material. Her lyrics (those that talk obliquely about sleeping around and and those that pin-point the love-hate relationship every leaver has about their home town) are poetry of emotion. Her tunes flip between dance-until-you-drop euphoria and mellow space-folk. What stops her being great is her instinct for production. When others produce her, its sublime, but her own (or her usual producer’s) instincts on how she should sound just aren’t there. And its these instincts that are most likely going to follow her on … There’s more

Culch.ie Calling Cards - Gigs - September 20 - 26 2010

GIGS Brandon Flowers, usually the front man of Killers, remains stubbornly proud of his hometown, Las Vegas. he makes that clear when discussing his first solo album, Flamingo, which takes its name from a Sin City downtown street on which Sam’s Town is located. That’s where Flowers used to buy his records. “I grew up there, so it’s close to my heart,” … “I feel a responsibility to represent where I’m from, to defend it. It’s a place that a lot of people loathe. I can’t help but love it. I grew up with a lot of people who couldn’t wait to leave, and that was always strange to me. I feel a real connection to it. It’s in my blood.” He plays The Academy, Dublin on 22 September. Tickets. “Flamingo” is on the shelves now. Tim Robbins and The Rogues Gallery Band (yes, THAT Tim Robbins) plays at Whelans, … There’s more

God Help the Girl - Come Monday Night

“Come Monday Night” is the first music video from God Help The Girl, a story set to music by Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian. This is the first single from a new album by Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian. Some five years in the making, Murdoch had the idea when out for a run and then worked away on it, bringing in people like Catherine Ireton from Limerick, the Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon, Asya from Smoosh and the members of Belle and Sebastian. It’s an album about a story, performed by an ensemble and created with love. I think that’s the best way of describing it. The official website is over here - I particularly love the Q&A. If the rest of the album - released June 19 - is as good as the first single, it could become a summer soundtrack.
