Competition Closed: See the Traces show in the Olympia

*** Competition Closed *** *** Congratulations to Maylis Campbell *** *** Thank you to everyone who entered *** Before I go on, check out this preview video from the show. It looks so cool - I cannot wait to see it: [local /wp-content/uploads/2010/03/traces2.flv nolink] Traces features 5 young artists fresh out of circus school, all in their early twenties, mixing classic acrobatics with such street forms as skateboard, basketball, and parcours. The result is an intimate circus experience (à la Cirque du Soleil) yet with a more urban flavor, as these young artists explode onto the stage with a renewed dynamic energy.

Showtime Circus: A Cautionary Tale

I like the circus, the popcorn, the clowns, the girls spinning round, forty feet off the ground and not wearing much, at least that’s what I’ve found. I’ve come to accept that they make their living charging ridiculous rates for refreshments and photos and the rest. So when my four year old came back from playschool brandishing his “ticket” for the circus I read the flyer/voucher and resigned myself to a show. Circus Showtime has come to Dublin 15, they are six in number and they don’t have a tent or any trucks. They have instead a van and a hall in the local sports ground. The first half hour involved the single clown shaking hands with all the kids and playing musical chairs followed by a few more games where we watched our kids playing. Then we were introduced to the amazing Lisa and her doves, “The Fantail Fantasy”, she … There’s more

Giggles and Thrills at the Circus

Anyone looking for some post Christmas cheer? Head along to Fossetts Annual Christmas Circus held at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. This is my second circus of the year (previous was another well known Irish Circus) and hands down this Human Only Circus is by far better value for money (and no animal activists on the way in!) I brought along the best critics, a 9 and 7 year old who screamed, laughed, clapped and tried to figure out the magic tricks for the two hour show!

Free Urban Circus Skills Workshops

If you missed the Urban Circus a couple of weeks ago, you have another chance to entertain the kids and let them get down to some juggling, stilt walking, diabolo juggling or tight rope walking. Who knows, they might learn enough skills to run away with the circus For the next two weekends the Urban Circus Skills Workshop will be on in Wolfe Tone Park, Dublin 1 between 2.00pm and 5.00pm. They are planning a range of free walk-in workshops for kids in juggling, stilt-walking - I’m sure they are only little stilts! - the ancient chinese art of Diabolo, and walking the tight rope. All workshops are free and you do not need to book in advance, just show up between 2 and 5pm on 22, 23, 29 or 30 August at Wolfe Tone Park and enjoy! With school time approaching fast, I’m sure kids will want to squeeze … There’s more

The Temple Bar Circus Festival, July 9 to 12

We’re barely over the Street Performance World Championships before we’re into another action-filled showcase for world class performers. The Temple Bar Circus Festival is coming to town soon! With comic trapeze and aerial circus feats, roving dancers, comedy acts, a circus cruise and street samba, there’s a whole lot going on from July 9 to 12. Events include a dragon walkabout, an art jam, a cannonball circus, a face painting workshop, a screening of Moulin Rouge in Meeting House Square (!), a Chinese Pole workshop, a Man in a box, a screening of Adventureland, something called Animatazz, an acrobatic workship, a militant traffic warden and a circus skills workshop - that’s a lot of things over four days! Best of all? It’s all free. Yes, that’s right, free. There’s a lot that you’ll want to see, either with children or friends or both! There’s the Loyal Club, an award-winning show … There’s more

And She Dreamed Of The Circus

The show was perfect, from start to finish. From the moment Zoe’s parents started levitating in their chairs, it was obvious that this was a show like no other. The level of skill and obvious dedication those performers have is extraordinary. The balance of humour (with John the clown) and breathtaking stunts (my favourite being the Banquine) was impeccable, the music creating the perfect atmosphere, and background performers ensuring that there was always something to look at.
