ESB Electric Ireland Feis Ceoil: Classically Good Looking

While not being mature enough not to think that the word ‘pianist’ deserves a wee giggle every time, we do think we ought to give the nod to the upcoming classical music fest that is the ESB Electric Ireland Feis Ceoil. Happening at the RDS from April 4th - 16th tickets are a fairly fabulous €5 per day and there are a few highlights on the line-up that Culch are hoping to catch. If you’re into strings (who isn’t?) the Aileen Gore Cup is being hotly contested by violinists, cellists, double bassists, harpists and even guitarists on April 14th at 12 and 2pm in the Concert Hall. On the same bat day and same bat channel, the Morris Grant €2,500 bursary (piano) is happening at 7pm. And the piece de resistance, the Gala Concert featuring some of the best of the Feis Ceoil competitors along with The Celtic Tenors, will happen … There’s more →

ESB Electric Ireland Feis Ceoil, Ireland’s biggest classical music festival, is set to showcase the talent of over 4,000 musicians from all over Ireland at the annual festival from 4th to 15th April inclusive. The email came in to me with this note attached: This ones for you chief…. you’re our Culch.ie trad music man But this is not a trad Irish feis ceol.That said, I wouldn’t let that throw you off the scent. If you are interested in music, there is an array of types to choose from at the Kilkenny Arts Festival. Matthew Nolan, a member of musical ensemble 3epkano and a lecturer in Dublin Business School is the curator of the Wired strand, an exploration into various musical genres. It is described on the website as being “like one of those old mix tapes you’d pass around from friend to friend” which is lovely. Here Matthew talks to Ken McGuire about his choices for 2010:

The Kilkenny Arts Festival is due to start on 6th August next in Kilkenny, marking the beginning of a 10 day festival of Bertie Bassetts - All Sorts! This is the 37th year of the festival and the maturity of the festival shows in the numerous, wide-ranging and quality acts they have lined up for 2010. To make things easier, the festival has been separated into 9 different strands - that’s nine varieties of ways in which you can be entertained! Wired - a musical exploration. According to curator Matthew Nolan, this strand features one of the best live acts performing in Ireland at the moment, And So I Watch You From Afar.
